but something happened towards the end of the the 80s, like 1989 into 1990, where this incredible, once-in-a-century insipidness seems to have set in (the post-cold war affluence dividend/malaise, or whatever). it's hard to characterize it.
Gen-X was defined by a feeling of anticlimax, disaffection, of whining that 'nothing ever happens anymore! oh well, whatever, nevermind.' and when you watch media from that period, you can kind of understand their mood. it just seemed like the whole world was in a holding pattern for years, watching 'Arachnophobia.' |
