Q is limited to business hotel chains like marriott, hyatt, hilton, radisson, etc. we're not talking about luxe / boutique chains.

If you book a hotel based on brand and not based on the specific logistical needs of your trip and other practical considerations, you're a retard.

whatever it is you need to pick one and stick with it. Marriottt is probably the best in terms of ubiquity and quality though they are annoying about a lot of shit.

I used to be a fan of Starwood before they got taken over by Marriottt. Fewer hotels but they had a much better points structure than others.

disagree re sticking with one. hotel status is flame unless ur traveling an shitton and getting the highest tier status and even then, the benefits are still kinda worthless flame.

airline loyalty to get airline status is far more important because the difference between Y and F/J is light years.

depends on how much you travel I guess. It's easier to actually use the points when they're all under one chain vs. spread around, like I just stayed in a Hilton a few weeks ago for the first time in years and I doubt I'll ever use the few points from that trip. status is mostly flame I agree.

airline status you're competing with wagecucks with up in the air jobs who fly on company dime constantly and with the RSFs of the world. that's an uphill battle to get any meaningful benefit.

I have Marriott Ambassador and LHW Aurelien status and they almost always give us upgrades to suites. That being said we are not strictly brand loyal and pick whatever the best hotel is and stay at lots of indies, FS, MO, Aman, Pen, Etc as well…

You can get 40 Bonvoy nights w the credit card and they have a lot of double stay credit bonuses if you’re staying at their high end properties it’s easy to meet Ambassador spend. LHW however is invite only and straight spend no idea where the cutoff is.

Hilton and Hyatt don’t have enough at the high end and Hyatt footprint is too small.

tbf, a suite upgrade is pretty worthless to me -- and i imagine it's worthless to most business travelers, and the vest majority of leisure travelers who are couples, as opposed to families -- especially relative to Y vs F/J. who is spending that much time in the room that a suite really affects your QOL? if ur with a family, a suite upgrade seems like a way to save on a second room.

if the room isnt some bullshit urban style closet, a normal room is perfectly fine for 2 people. but if its some closet bullshit room, then..

90% of the time I pay with points I accumulate on my credit card for hotels. You can get the credit cards that also get you elite status and kill two birds with one stone.

For airlines I generally just buy first class anyway.

I'm Marriott Bonvoy Platinum and it's a big deal for me. 4pm checkout means that if you have morning meetings the day you're checking out that you can often go to the hotel, shower and change into non-business clothes before heading to the airport. Also, you get free premium internet.

Post-Starwood acquisition it’s been Marriott by a mile for most people. Marriott has always had a lead in terms of the family road trip coverage, but Starwood gave them so much more at the higher end and in big cities. It’s definitely a more local/regional question and I don’t pretend to know the specifics for someone who lives in the Midwest. But for us there’s every option we need in all the bigger cities we travel to regularly. Eg nicer ones that are great if wife and I can snag a night for the kids with grandparents or aunts and we want to do something cool in town for a birthday or anniversary, a hotel near my in-laws that is a legit resort with a 180 golf course and water park plus a spa and various special events, and when I have to go to my nieces graduation in BFE there’s a Marriott that’s the closest major chain. IMO at least in Texas and CA it’s the McDonald’s to all the other chains fighting to be Wendy’s and Jack in the Box.

Hilton is easy to rack up points and there are several more places to find them in rural Midwest when I'm visiting family and want a free room.

Marriott is where most of my conferences used to be and seem higher quality in general but I stopped going to conferences after March 2020

I basically use 2 brands:

1. Marriott (I'm Platinum in Bonvoy). Tons of locations, mid-range chains are actually quite nice, rewards program includes some nice perks (really late checkout, free internet). They have good credit cards that lets you earn points very quickly.

2. IHG (I'm Platinum here too). If you travel a lot with large dogs then you can't beat Kimptons. They all accept dogs with no size limits and with no extra fee. A lot of InterContinentals are dog friendly too. Their best credit card is very cheap and generates points like crazy and gives you Platinum status right away.
