If someone can only understand something through an analogy, that means they don't grasp the underlying thing itself, right? And won't be able to apply the analogical understanding to new situations?

if they can ONLY understand it through analogy, then they don’t understand it. if they are able to grasp the contours and nuances of the respective analogues and the analogy is a helpful stepping stone to comprehending the underlying concept itself, then it can be useful. intelligent, inquisitive, thoughtful people tend to learn and understand things better imo.
