that's like saying if i paid a $100 speeding ticket that i don't have money to pay a $500 fine if i contest it.
i don't have a strong opinion on whether this is worthwhile. near-frivolous strategies are employed all the time in large civil cases. i'm just saying it's not really a strong indication that he couldn't post if he runs out of options. there are plenty of wealthy trumpmos that would certainly pledge the securities necessary to secure these securities in exchange for a secured interest in some of his property. the article says he's been having trouble securing it because surety companies won't use property as collateral.
it seems clear to me that he is attempting to avoid or reduce the surety to avoid having to sell property or do other transactions in order to post it. i don't think there is any chance he couldn't come up with it.
why don't you go on the record -- do you think this appeal will fail because trump is absolutely unable to post the surety? do you think NYS is going to start levying him to satisfy the judgment?

"do you think this appeal will fail because trump is absolutely unable to post the surety?"
Isn't posting a bond a prerequisite to having the appeal heard? If so, then yes, the appeal would fail.
"do you think NYS is going to start levying him to satisfy the judgment?"
Obviously they are going to go after his assets the second they are allowed to. Are you kidding me?

i'm asking if the appeal WILL fail. as in, do people think that trump will be UNABLE to post the surety IF NYS requires it? my point is that this is obviously NBD and the lawyers are just trying to to reduce it or waive it.
>Obviously they are going to go after his assets the second they are allowed to. Are you kidding me?
it'll be past january when this happens. assuming trump is elected you think they'll be able to get at POTUSes assets? if he loses none of this matters.

there's also the value in keeping this case ongoing for as long as possible. why wouldn't trump employ delay tactics when if he is elected the whole matter will be on pause for four years?
herp derp "trump can't pay his bills lol." even if this was a 100% legitimate debt, it would still be in his interest to delay paying it as long as possible. which commonly occurs in every suit. the longer he avoids paying it the longer he can earn interest on that money. and it puts more and more pressure on the other side to settle. like, this happens in every fucking day all the time, something any lawyer who worked this type of shit would know.
this used to be a law bort.

it's so tedious.
"trump can't pay his bills, lol!"
"i think it's more likely he's doing this strategically than out of absolute necessity."
"lmfao then why do you love this snake!!!"
trump is a slimeball in my opinion. but my opinion of him generally is beside the point anyway. every time i point out you guys are engaging in TDS untethered from reality you eventually resort to shit like this.
if i said "obama isn't a foreign muslim" would it be a good retort to attack my support of him? it's a statement of fact and doesn't imply i support or oppose him generally. you guys can only see things through the lens of partisanship.

What's going on ITT? Is someone impotently screeching?
I can't tell because all of the posts are getting deleted. I bet they're really upset about that.

Why doesn't Trump just do what the other people who were fined $450 million for loans they paid back do?
There should be a mechanism in place as this is obviously standard practice in NY.

Even if Trump could come up with the money it would be stupid of him not to play chicken and see if the courts will blink.
EDIT: thank GOD someone else pointed this out already,.

>On this case he actually had competent attorneys*. It's not a legal strategy at all, it's just that he's desperate. He legit can't get a bond. I guess you want to debate the semantics of "broke" now that you're conceding there wasn't some 4d legal chess strategy.
i'm not conceding that. i said that there is likely some other reason trump's team is pursuing this beyond it literally being unable to come up with the money. whether the strategy is stupid is irrelevant.
i don't think it's productive to debate the semantics of something we don't know and never will know outside of some catastrophe the forces trump to reveal his financial situation. maybe trump has most of his assets invested in bitcoin and bitcoin crashes 90% tomorrow.
>Also makes it much more likely these guys aren't lying or grossly exaggerating the difficulty in procuring the bond in their affirmations to the appellate division.
holy shit, a lawyer exaggerating how a client will be impacted by an adverse decision to persuade a court to get to result favorable to the client? wtf!? call the bar!

First, let me say that I am angry and saddened by the Court's decision. It is a departure from their usual practice, which has been to deny such applications, particularly where the argument for a stay is premised on nothing more than "I can't get a bond" and there are no other extraordinary circumstances (ex. a disabled person is losing their home to foreclosure). The Court obviously caved to pressure from those who have complained, without evidence, that Trump has been treated unfairly by NY courts. I stand by my position that Trump's finances are precarious and that this was a desperate maneuver.
I also steadfastly oppose his brand of politics, which presents a clear and present danger to American economic, social, and political security. I have always been fair-minded and even-handed, so I do not say this lightly. Your support for him is absolutely disgraceful. I'm taking the rest of the day off from the board.

in this very thread i called him a slimeball. i have never been a trumpmo outside of preferring him as the best option among the available choices.
that being said, the point is that this was, from the very outset, and strategic maneuver. and it was very obviously so. your moral opposition that that and disappointment in the judges decision is beside the point. this could have been a million to one shot and i repeatedly said i am not weighing in on whether the strategy was good, only that is *was* strategic.
i respect that you replied at all but ljl at never taking the L. can't just say "oops, turns out i was wrong!" instead you have to make it about your disappointment in the judiciary (lol) and my support of trump (lol).
