Jared Kushner on Gaza: ‘Waterfront Property Could Be Very Valuable’

It didn’t quite work out, as Israel has spent the past few months leveling the Gaza Strip in a relentless offensive that has left over 30,000 Palestinians dead, countless displaced, and a famine looming as Israel has cut off humanitarian aid to the region. The brutal campaign began in response to an attack by Hamas on Oct. 7 that killed 1,139 Israelis.
Kushner, a real-estate developer who had zero diplomacy or foreign policy experience when the former president tapped him for the role, spoke about the ongoing conflict in Gaza during an interview at Harvard earlier this month. “Gaza’s waterfront property could be very valuable … if people would focus on building up livelihoods,” he said, adding that Israel should “do its best” to “move the people out and then clean it up.”
Kushner’s comments were reported by The Guardian on Tuesday.
Kushner said that he would “move” those in Gaza to the desert in southern Israel, and that “with diplomacy” they could be moved into Egypt. The interviewer seemed surprised at the idea that Gazans could be relocated to southern Israel. “I’m sitting in Miami Beach right now and I’m looking at the situation and I’m thinking: What would I do if I was there?” Kushner replied.

I think you are more likely to shift the Overton window on Palestine if Democrats were in opposition, actually. More members of Congress would be freer to signal support for Palestinians, and they would be able to do it more forcefully if Orange Man was seen as the person supporting Israel. The media would be more willing to talk about it as well.
As it stands now, Biden and his handlers have done everything they possibly can to support Israel behind the scenes while offering tepid condemnations to appease the backbenchers in their party that are intentionally designed to placate those constituencies while doing nothing to actually support the Palestinians. It's all very evil and crooked. I'd rather we have a President who would do this stuff in the open and have more vigorous debate from others who are rightly horrified by what Israel is doing. |

Starting with Gen X the entire west has been sick of Israel’s shit for 30+ years. If you were old enough to be politically aware at some point between 1956-1973 you more than likely came to a view of Israel as the lone good country in a sea of smelly, backwards, inbred, child-fucking aspiring terrorists. But Gen X came of age during the Intifadas, the Lebanese civil war, Iran-Iraq and then the decade plus of Saddam’s bullshit. It was already becoming obvious in the 80s and 90s that the right wing of Israeli politics wanted Palestinian genocide and nukes dropped on any Arab nation that got too uppity. By 2004 the generation gap was already massive, but boomers had all the levers of power.
In 2030 the U.S. will, at a minimum, not act as Israel’s lapdog and bodyguard at the UN and will condition aid on Israel not indulging its right wing sociopath faction’s plans for the West Bank. Israel may buck, but then the discussion in the U.S. will be whether to cut off aid entirely. The Jewish population in the U.S. will continue declining and the potential political cost will be less and less as the 2030s continue. The only potential path for this dynamic to change would be a massive shift in Israeli domestic politics where the IDF-aligned factions are resoundingly defeated and Israel takes seriously that it must shift from belligerent asshole posture into sneaky trickster diplomatic posture, but Israel has even more pronounced generational headwinds, so the idea that this shift could happen in the next five years seems very farfetched. |
