I’m remarking on the decline of prestige/tradition at these small-but-good LACs. Place like Amherst, Williams, Swarthmore, Middlebury, etc. SHOULD be for the above average kid at Hotchkiss, Deerfield, Andover, etc. who is going to work in NYC or maybe Boston or DC—not randoms from the rest of the country who are LARPING as some kind of New Englander or Mid-Atlantic person with no understanding of the history/culture of these schools. I get them wanting to apply to Harvard, MIT, Columbia—those are national/international schools in urban areas with good grad programs too. But it’s weird to me that some quirky trans kid from Hawaii with a not-snobby dad and a crackhead mom would be all that interested in a tiny college in rural Massachusetts that basically exists to credential a very specific part of east coast elite.
