An absolutely top-down feat of social engineering that spanned about two and a half decades and worked 100%.
Gen-Xers grew up with smoking in planes, smoking in McDonalds, ashtrays everywhere. And now its completely gone.
Anyone lighting a cigarette, who doesnt have 100% or 0% social status, is stigmatized heavily.
There's no pushback, no serious voices demanding smoking rooms in offices or whatever.
It all happened very quickly and affected all corners of society.

for better or worse, it was a complete make-over of american society, and it happened lickety-split with minimal pushback and total success, and as I wrote, it was entirely non-democratic.
depressing in a sense, but also can be viewed with some optimism. a regime that took such a stance towards, say, cell phones or pornography or promiscuity or some other perceived "ill", could likely quash it within 30 years.
imagine some butlerian movement from the top which sought to eliminate the public use of smart phones. its doable

We've solved the nicotine distribution problem with mouth pouches.
I have been an on-again, off-again smoker for many years, but even I get irate when I get stunk up with someone else's smoke. It is nauseating and a nuisance and if I had an officemate chain smoking Id get one of us the fuck out of there.
nonetheless it was an odd choice for a total social re-do, and it happened so swiftly and quietly that its remarkable. There are a million things more pernicious for individuals and society that go unaddressed. Nor does anyone even really acknolwedge that sometimes the leaders just swoop in and make changes

it's not clear what the true motivation was. it clearly wasn't 'public health'. maybe southern-fried Big Tobacco shut Jews out of their profits or something.
it was a bonanza for the (((lawyers))) who got those massive 900b paydays.

I think about this often enough as I enjoy smoking but I'm also careful not to smoke too much. I cap it to a few times a year and that's it. I obviously don't do it around family and wait till work trips or when I'm confident enough to be subtle. But even though I smoke barely a hundred cigarettes a year, it's also getting harder to enjoy cigarettes without feeling tremendous amount of guilt.
Full time cigarette smoking is unquestionably unhealthy. For all the defenders of smoking, millions did die too early from it. In their 50s and 60s. It's a young man's habit but not for older people. Not everyone can successfully manage a mild social smoking habit. And it does stink, the juxtaposition between the seductive smell of a cigarette and the weird, nasty aftertaste on you is real.
On the whole we're better off a society without smoking but it's also apparent that people simply migrated from cigarettes to fast food and now weed with equally bad health outcomes.

I think we could see something similar with social media - especially with the claws comoing out for Tik Tok.
Other than just generically being in favor of "freedom", how is America better off with all of us watching this bullshit on TikTok and Instagram?
It's heroin and we're all addicted to it...

I didn't really mind it at first because a lot of the best conversations that you'd have at bars & whatnot just shifted outside where it was easier to talk anyway.
But over time, smoking has become less and less popular and now you can't really count on a critical mass of people to share a cig with.
