Lots of people have stressful or difficult jobs, but you disproportionately hear teachers complaining.

Most jobs suck. If you don’t like it, stop complaining and get a different job (though you’ll probably have to start working during the summer I guess).

'teacher' is too large of a population for big pay increases without big budget consequences. one of the main modern problems in the US is the trend toward banning any kind of discipline or classroom order, and insisting that violent/shitty/disruptive kids be sent back to class no matter what. money won't fix this. that's a cultural problem stemming from modern american retardation and insanity.

Teachers should definitely be paid more. In my area, the pay spread between a teacher with no experience and a teacher with 30 years of experience is about $10k ($65k-$75k) so a total of 15%. At the same time, the pay is terrible. Adjusted for inflation, a 15-year teacher today is making about the same as they did when they started with no real pay increase over time at all. That's a very long time to devote to a career and to get absolutely no recognition for your years of service. And, the new teachers coming in now are just getting paid less. That's not good for the future. There's lots of problems with this. There are other issues afoot as well.

Seems to me there is plenty of false empathy for teachers-- proles love to go on about how noble teachers are and how they are responsible for our future, etc. People talk a great game about how important teachers are but then don't really care about actually policing the profession to make sure it has competent people. Teacher's union isn't cutting it on that front. They don't give a shit about your kids health and wellbeing if it interferes with the union agenda.

Most people will say they like teachers and that it’s a hard job, (though most people will also think to themselves and not say that summers off and 6.5 hour work days seems like a decent deal). To the extent that people don’t like “the schools” these days they don’t blame teachers, even if they acknowledge that there are some truly dogshit teachers who should be fired. But they mostly blame the unions and the admin, which is correct. The problem is that we don’t sufficiently question the baked in structural elements like the school calendar and paying thousands of school districts at the local level to do the same jobs that could easily scale in the age of computers and software (or worse they do pure made up/make work bullshit like diversity promotion programs that just involve bad stats research or else their jobs are to get bamboozled by the snake oil sales men that educational publishers pay to bilk tax dollars out of the schools).

It would be very good for this country to fire 80% of the admin in the country, run admin at the state level, not the local level, publicize and scrutinize Ed spending much more and use the billions of dollars of savings that would generate to hire 50% more teachers and pay them 50-75% more. As a trade off for those improvements we should also shift the school day to an 830-530 schedule with built in after school activities and way more time for independent and non-academic/recess periods, and go to year round school with 4 seasonal 2-3 week breaks annually. Teaching positions would be a way better use of the 1-2M super underemployed liberal arts and soft science grads working at Starbucks. And most people would stick with it as a career if they only had 15-20 kids in a classroom instead of 30 and it paid like a decent white collar job. Do all that and we’re in good shape, other than maybe making it less expensive to educate/babysit sped retards.

I actually think it’s the opposite. Post-Trump the populist right needs to move on from pure race-based/immigration-based fear mongering and find a new major cause. Immigration needs to shift to be a “common sense” and “bipartisan consensus” against all the open borders bullshit, but it won’t work well to continue to push that issue as the primary agenda when the 40+M Americans that are 70 or older (ie the 90% white boomers and older cohort) are dead. Education is the best candidate and a pro-worker (ie pay teachers more) and pro-consumer (ie student and parent) agenda that attacks the admin, the unions and the Ed PhDs as elitist shitlibs is CR. Plenty of black people and Latino people who are forced to send their kids to dogshit schools would want to vote for this. You could get a lot of support from non-white parents if you just made it sound like you were serious about kicking out/isolating the violent shithead children to make school work for the kids that aren’t violent shitheads. See also, making the K-12 to trade school pipeline work again. That’s a platform that will appeal to the Trump coalition in a way that would let it grow in the future.

1) Teacher pay is insanely low. Teachers in my area start at $50k, whereas my paralegals make $80k - and these are not big law paralegals - they're glorified admin assistants.

2) The "teaching is easy voices are fucking idiotic. Think about how much a normal office drone preps for a 20 minute presentation (often weeks), and they're exhausted afterwards. Teachers are lecturing for hours a day and have to be "on" even when they're not. In many ways, watching my own kids is more demanding than being a lawyer - and I ahve 3 of them - not fucking 30.

teachers are profoundly socially overrated as it is. they're by and large retarded (look at the GRE scores of people attending teaching programs), and enthusiastic propagandists. half of them are fucking their students. they are lazy and entitled and typically crush the spirits of the few intelligent children in their care. if salaries were determined according to negative externalities caused, the typical teacher would have to pay society $500k/year. fuck these broads

Teachers are paid fairly by virtue of the fact they get a pretty killer pension for only working 9 months out of the year. If they want to get paid more, they should forego their pensions.
