a car is a utilitarian thing to get you from point A to point B. I want to get there as quickly as possible not jerk off thinking about how great my car is.

and cars are far less pointless than most hobbies. if you're into the mechanics and restoration you're learning skills that actually have utility. and if you're into driving fast that's exhilarating and fun. even if you're just into looking at them and the their history, that's far cooler than being super into capeshit or something.

Cr. Boomers were fed a healthy diet of car propaganda and they greedily lapped it up. They were sold the idea that wasting their wageshekels on a quickly-depreciating asset was manly. Of course, using any other form of transportation is retarded and gay, but a car is worthless for anything beyond getting around. Americucks can’t even air their performance vehicles out without getting a speeding ticket. If I lived in Germany, I’d be willing to spend more on a nice car but in America it’s pointless consumption

Both of the following are true.

1. Cars are 180

2. Cars are not 180 enough to justify the amount of money the vast majority of people spend on them.

for a real hobbyist with money to spare, cars are a fine interest, but for people just buying a daily driver it is particularly dumb to care about performance or luxury beyond a pretty low threshold

Probably retarded to buy more than a used Corolla until your house is fully paid off (or equivalent invested), you're retirement is fully funded and all of your kids college + grad school is fully funded. Then it's not retarded to blow money on a toy.

I work with car "enthusiasts" who are very passionate about specific makes and models. They get into arguments about stupid shit like V6 vs. V8 or certain trims. They also go to car meets and post videos of themselves "racing" down the highway. I told them I just want basic transportation and they think I'm a weird fag.

I learned a ton of physics just from learning what happens at each stage in a 4-stroke engine. Working on cars also gives you a feel for the tools and the kinds of forces involved in working with different kinds of metal.

This. Like a crash course on material sciences for those who have only book learned it. The geometries. The ability to resist forces. The sheer feel OF everything manly and mechanical…

Picked up the MIT Klepper book after I started learning about engineering and physics of car engines.

Also starting to be an entry point into hardware programming and electrical engineering as the ECUs need to be tweaked when you modify sensors/engine swaps, highly modified after market shit, etc.

To find the right balance of thermal equilibrium, pressure, torque, efficiency, among ALL modules and units of a car is a worthwhile endeavor of SCHOLARSHIP.

Modyfying your exhaust manifold for a minimal torque curve shift is prole as fuck and 97% of “car people”.

Also a control freak and possibly aspie. No amount of money can ever substitute the pleasure of something I/we built panel by panel.

Yeah you can take it as far as you want as long as you're not paying for old Volvo or VW parts. I always respected black doods who would collect old cop cars and raid them for parts.
