hair metal means they wore makeup, teased hair, and had outlandish costumes (whole band not just front man). Music wise there was a uniformity to the songs - fun song about girls, followed by power ballad.

Guns does not fit any of the above categories. do you consider alice in chains hair metal? Aerosmith? Metalica?

They were closer to hair metal than any other kind of metal. Metallica was a straight up thrash band in the beginning, GnR never was.

Silent Lucidity by queensryche was 91.

Bon Jovi had a hit album later into the 90s (maybe 93 or so)

Motley Crue had Dr Feelgood in 89.

if you count FNM as hair band than Epic was in 1990 I believe.

its probably like some Ratt song when they got into their more blusy phase and therefore not exactly hair metal anymore. Like "Way Cool Junior" etc. (but that was 1988 WTF??)

Pornograffitti from Extreme released in 1990.

Skid Row's "Slave to the Grind" released in 1991 (Monkey Business, etc)

Winger “In The Heart of the Young” was 1990

Wicked Sensation - Lynch Mob was 1990 as well

the last mega-hit album of the hair metal era was def leppard's 'adrenalize.' it's somewhat forgotten today, but it dominated the album charts in north america for a over a month in april/may of 1992. this was AFTER nirvana's 'nevermind' had gone to #1 for a couple weeks, earlier in '92 (in fact, adrenalize's success may have partly been a reaction to that by hair metal/party rock fans).

the spring/summer of 1992 was the decisive cultural transition point between 'the 80's' and 'the 90's.' windows 3.1 was also released in april of 1992, which was another keystone event in that shift.

the death of hair metal was actually a bit more drawn-out than modern pop-culture memoralizing usually recognizes. adrenalize was the last #1 hit, but the genre was still chugging along into 1993. eg, bon jovi's 'keep the faith' came out in november 1992, reached the top 5 albums, and spawned several radio hits.

it wasn't really until GNR's 'spaghetti incident' flopped in december 1993 that hair metal was no longer a major commercial force.

some established bands had a few fadeout hits as the dying embers of the genre flickered in the early 90s, but the last band that 'broke' as basically an 80s hair metal band and not a 90s Alt-Rock band was Ugly Kid Joe. they had 2 hits 'Everything About You' and a cover of 'Cat's in the Cradle' in like 93 that had a definite bright 80s hard rock tone that totally cut against the grain of the prevailing drop-D Seattle sludge-rock sound.

'hair metal' just means mid/late 80s post-van halen 'Los Angeles' sounding hard rock performed by guys with long hair, ripped clothes, and often makeup.

that's all it means. people ITT trying to claim that it is some super niche distinct genre of music -- like Poison had some uniquely 'hair metal' sound that was instantly differentiated from Ted Nugent's Damn Yankees (who had a #1 pop metal hit in 1990) -- are being retarded. it just means '80s era metal/hard rock that got played on FM pop radio' and stopped being played on FM radio once Grunge became hegemonic in the early 90s. that's all it means.

Coming of Age and High Enough sound significantly more like Poison/Warrant/Winger/Motley/Whitesnake/etc. than anything GnR did. If anything you proved the opposite of your point by showing that an NY based supergroup could be hair metal (even though it has nothing to do with the late 80s LA scene) because there is a distinct sound associated with it.

if you're counting Guns 'n Roses they had one other release that post-dates User Your Illusion called The Spaghetti Incident. they put out a cover of Nazareth's 'Hair of the Dog' that got a lot of radio airplay in 1994.

they were definitely part of the 80s Los Angeles glam metal revival, which is basically what people mean by 'hair metal.' you can 'split hairs' (lmao) definitionally, but they are pretty much what 90% of people mean by 'hair metal'.

no idea but pantera comes to mind when i think of hair metal bands that were very successful for a long time after the genre died. they were full on hair metal back in the 80s
