Mocking phony Jewish numbers is more my wheelhouse but I'll bite anyway

Access to American trade networks and preferential trade status within our domestic markets is probably still the most valuable soft power buy-in on the planet. Any sort of diplomatic divorce will hurt China immensely, which may leave the CCCP feeling like they may need to make a move on Taiwan that they probably can't afford financially or politically. America gets the W albeit with some unexpected consequences in mutually contested markets down the line

If China looked set to invade Taiwan I expect we would tell Taiwan that if they wanted us to send a bunch of Patriots or whatever then they need to move a lot of their most advanced chip-making equipment and employees to the US.

And tell them that if they refused and China invaded we'd probably have to bomb their chip factories ourselves to keep China from capturing it intact.

That's a great way to encourage them to peacefully unify with China.

Option 1: lose everything by moving it to the US

Option 2: lose everything in the war

Option 3: join China peacefully and they'll probably offer some incentives for them to join

Samsung has been decent to American interests domestically and abroad and it's about as good as we can hope for atm as a counterweight to Apple's power in the smartphone space. We really need a third party privacy oriented phone made here in the West (preferably Europe)

At least one SK chipmaker already got busted trying to move ASML EUV lithography machines into China. But I'm sure you have eyes on that situation, and you know Samsung isn't doing it. For that matter, I'm sure Samsung would never inadvertently hire someone who can be bought off by China. Whoever heard of a Korean taking a bribe?

lol as opposed to airtight Taiwan? U.S. tech moved all its manufacturing into China 20 years ago. You think Apple (and Microsoft and Facebook and Amazon and Intel and Dell and HP and Tesla and and and) wasn’t an open book for the CCP for the last 25 years you’re hilariously naive. At least now that the CCP has to figure out how to operate in Taylor, TX to get their on site reconnaissance done.

This is a good question for Samsung or whoever signed off on this deal

I'd guess we're "buying" the manufacturing process as a whole. Equipment, training for US workers, production techniques, etc. It's possible some bureaucrat looked at production figures from Bosch or Broadcomm or whoever else made a bid and liked Samsung's figures better. It's also possible this buys some sort of lateral trade deal or intelligence commitment from some political faction in SK. That part is very difficult to determine without firsthand access to the deal room

They're running into the same production trap that the Soviets ran into towards the end of the Khrushchev regime and CCCP leadership will probably fail (clarifying: reach a point of crisis. crisis is not a nation-shattering thing) without more Westernization or some new China specific ideological sect of modernization. The outlets of the West basically optimize the "demand" part of the trade equation for the Chinese, and once this comes to an end either organically/for cost reasons (what we're seeing in the pivot to Vietnam and Indonesia) or by Western government fiat (hints of this in American policy 2016-, happens sporadically in Europe though less so due to necessity from needless Russia war) China's lauded "productivity" in manufacturing will come to a steady taper

And I say this as someone a little sympathetic to China

the problem is that 'commentators' have been predicting china's 'imminent' collapse for decades. that infamous gordan chang book came out in 2001. instead of showing a bit of humility and admitting they were wrong, they keep reciting the exact same script, which is rather suspicious.

Nothing imminent and no general collapse as far as I can tell. The Chinese would need to be convinced that any alternative wouldn't just look like the looting of the husk of the USSR under general Western-set liberalization, and that probably is not happening in a country with decent if highly indoctrinated historical literacy

Just some rough waters ahead and probably another round of high political feuding, which the party has gotten remarkably good at concealing from the public and foreign orgs for the sakes of the appearance of universal coherency

I agree that China's enduring political strength under the party is a bugbear for the neoliberal center of the Anglo-American regime, and one that can't be adequately addressed without reflexive saber rattling from the West or an uncomfortable series of discussions on either fundamental Chinese difference or that strong alternatives to the Western oligarchic-democratic present exist

We don't really need to demonize them

We mainly just need to put forth a better effort on winning over third world markets while shutting out Chinese access. America still has an immense amount of soft pull with most of these contested markets; we just don't really seem to capitalize on it much, in no small part because it seems as if the Department of State is fighting a political war at home instead of putting all of its resources towards fighting for American interests in unaligned nations. Containment is fine and realistically we've had this symbiotic trade relationship for so long that it'd be the messiest of all divorces to break on instantaneously. Disentanglement is fine bit by bit and we need to stop leaving whole sectors of production up to the Chinese just because "it's cheap", which is to say that it benefits consumers in the short-term and internationalist oligarchs in the long term

It's not good but it can be mitigated and culturally outlasted although demographics are another thing entirely

Anecdotal; minute but immense amount of shrieking and howling over shit like "tradwife" or "amish" influencers is a positive sign that the cultural opposition is running out of hot air to prop up the experientially empty and often godless lifestyles that many in that segment of the left sustain themselves with

Exactly. We're not supposed to be getting into consumer devices.

1. That's a shit market. Companies like MediaTek and Broadcom are the competition here. You gotta beat them before you can take on Samsung.

2. There's no risk of iPhones vanishing, period. There just isn't.

We are supposed to be making chips for military applications. The whole idea was to ween ourselves off foreign suppliers for them shit. The idea was to have a warm base that could make semiconductors on 28nm process and then push it from there. 28nm and above is supposed to be "legacy" technology that can be pawned off on the government. No idea what we need SAMSUNG for.

ljl Japs (ok Chinese this time) are still getting bent over by Micron 40 years after Micron turned that kind of thing into high art. Looks like they are picking up more ca$h out of this legislation that Samsung too. A lot more.

-------------

On 22 October 2021, Micron closed the sale of IM Flash's Lehi, Utah fab to Texas Instruments for a sale price of US$900 million.[47] With the passage of the CHIPS and Science Act, Micron announced its pledge to invest billions in new manufacturing within the US.[48] In September 2022, Micron announced they would invest $15 billion in a new facility in Boise, Idaho.[49] In October 2022 Micron announced a $100 billion expansion in Clay, New York.[50][51]

In May 2023, the Cyberspace Administration of China barred major Chinese information infrastructure firms from purchasing Micron products, citing significant national security risks.[52] The move was seen as retaliation against US sanctions on China's semiconductor industry and related export controls.[53][52] In November 2023 Chinese chipmaker Yangtze Memory Technologies Corp (YMTC) filed a lawsuit against Micron alleging infringement of eight of its patents.[54]

On February 27, 2024, Judge Maxine Chesney of the U.S. Federal District Court in San Francisco acquitted Fujian Jinhua Integrated Circuit, whom Micron had sued for IP theft, of the charge in a non-jury verdict, believing that there was sufficient evidence to support the charge.[55][56]

Don't worry Idaho, Micron's $100 billion (yeah) new factory in New York won't be bigger than whatever it already has built in Idaho.
