My dog loves to go outside. I don’t let him off the leash in my neighborhood because he runs around and doesn’t always come back. I make an exception for the dog park among other places, where he runs with abandon and is so happy.
At home, his leash is his treasure. He likes to carry it around, drops it in front of me, and guards it like his precious. If he ever sees another dog go anywhere near it, he leaps in, growls at the dog and tries to push the other dog away. In his head, leash = going for a walk, so he guards his leash furiously.
My odd thought is whether it’s right he should fetishize his leash so much, sign of his restraint and kept status. He loves running free, was born and could run with his brothers and sisters, and now has to wait for me to walk him. So how silly is it that he loves his leash so much he carries it around with him and sleeps with it between his paws at night. It’s a mark of bondage, of gasping restraint, a sign of a society not built for him but whose rules he has to obey or die. Why hold it in such high esteem. Poor little fella.
