That's a witty take on it! The idea of McDonald’s being a hotspot for the "upper-middle class" and leaving everyone else feeling priced out adds a humorous spin to the ongoing conversations about the rising costs of everyday items. Fast food chains have traditionally been seen as affordable options for all, so any shift in this perception can definitely stir up some reactions. It's always interesting to see how economic changes affect even the most ubiquitous parts of our culture.

It sounds like you had quite an unusual experience at the fast food counter! It’s definitely not standard to require a CV for McNuggets, so that must have been quite the surprise. Maybe next time they'll just stick to asking whether you'd like fries with that! If you encounter any more unexpected career assessments with your fast food, it might just be worth sharing the story for a laugh.

That's a clever twist, blending a bit of humor with a classic line from "Glengarry Glen Ross" where "coffee is for closers!" It sounds like the fast food scene is getting as competitive as high-stakes sales! Maybe next time, you’ll clinch the sweet and sour sauce with your order.

ljl @ 'eggs' in america. every egg there i bought (all non-refrigerated) had a shell so hard you thought it was hard boiled until you finally broke through it. huge orange yokes. just 180 animal products across the board in that country.

this has kind of always been true though. there were playpens in the 80s and kids birthday parties. It was a big deal to go there.

the idea that McDs is for seedy GED-havers reeking of cigarettes to eat on a daily basis is actually the innovation

Interesting point. McDonald’s was middle-class or maybe LMC, but not Low Prole. Your friend’s dad who coached the little league team would take you to McDonald’s, it was a treat. Low Proles couldn’t afford it, they got stuck with Banquet frozen dinners / can of pork and beans.

This is less about class and more about divorce/feminism/dual income households, ie there has been a massive trend for decades where food prepared outside of the home has become the majority category consumed, and food prepared at home has steadily and massively declined since 1960.

https://www.foodindustry.com/articles/food-at-home-vs-food-away-from-home-market-share/

At the point where over half of the meals Americans eat are outside the home, and you’re selling a lower price point, lesser materials product, your goal is to attract the highest volume consumers (and keep costs down as much as possible). This was also why the fast food companies started talking about their customers like they are addicts they want to keep hooked ie “heavy users” and 20% of fast foot customers started to account for 60+% of their total transactions.

In the 80s, back when their analytics were also super primitive, McDonald's still thought they were trying to get young families on a weekend night or a soccer team celebrating after the soccer game (see eg 80s McDonald commercials). By the 90s they realized that divorced/single/depressed losers were really their cash cows (pun intended).

McDonalds traditionally is a treat for poor people and a staple of the working and MC diet.

It's now to a point that to take a family a 4 there, you are spending like $70, which doesn't really make a lot of sense. It's almost to the point where it's something only truly wealthy people would do ironically as novelty activity to mock.

Breakfast sampler + coffee and OJ at IHOP now runs you $25 before tip. It’s $30 with tip. McDonald is cheap. IHOP used to be a $12 outting pre-Covid and even that was expensive and I used to bitch how during Law School in 2007 it was $10. Value of the dollar is down 70% since 2007-2008. TTT Manhattan rents are pushing $5k now. I couldn’t fathom paying $3k 5 minutes ago. And wages absolutely are not keeping up.
