They only needed oil from the indies because they lost access to Mongolia. That was the army's fault, not the navy, but the navy was told to fix it. I don't think it requires 20/20 hindsight they should have locked down that Mongolian oil before they expanded.

If Pearl Harbor was successful, it would have bought them another year or so. Given his experience as an American naval attaché, Admiral Yamamoto didn't want to mess with the US, but he had orders and Pearl Harbor was the best he could do.

literally japan's only chance to win the war was to embargo russia's siberia port so land/lease couldn't happen and invade russia at the same time as barbarossa started

but they would have needed germany to give them advance notice (they didn't) and they would have had to both override the very powerful japanese naval bureaucracy which insisted on sea war focus *and* to launch a ground war cutting off japanese supplies when japan was super wary of another ground war against russia given the last one they got totally assraped

put it together and they were simply fucked

Germany did give Japan advance notice. Little known fact: James Bond was based on the Soviet spy in Japan who warned the Soviet Union that Germany was about to launch Operation Barbarossa. He also informed the USSR that Japan was going to abide by the terms of their defeat in the Battles of Khalkin Ghol so they didn’t have to hold any meaningful forces in the east.

There's literally not a mention in here of James Bond besides the Figaro apparently calling him "Stalin's James Bond." Which is interesting, because the article also notes that Stalin failed to intervene and save him from Japan where he was summarily hanged. Kinda seems like a shitty inspiration for James Bond, if you axe me.

See below. I didn't want to say too much about this without a source to back me up. If you see the thread below it's pretty fuckin obvious that Japan miscalculated out of pure fear. The army in particular was gripped with THE FEAR.

In retrospect, Japan's alliance with Germany mean jack shit if there was no defensive alliance. As it stands, doesn't it seem weird that Japan never did shit to help Germany, and Germany never did shit to help Japan, even though they were supposed to be on the same team against Russia and NOT the USA?

It's fucked up. The Kwantung Army was supposed to fierce, but they were more afraid to fight Russia than the navy was afraid to fight the USA. They could have easily defeated Russia but they didn't take their shot in 41.

Japan did nothing to help Germany w Russia. Russia had like 10 divisions guarding against Japanese invasion of Russia from China and transferred them to stop Germans at Stalingrad after Japan told Russia it wasn’t going to attack.

Not sure why Hitler even declared war on US. Made no sense

You should be more humble about dismissing their decision making as simply atrophied/fearful. japan's leadership had tons of shortcomings but cowardice wasn't one. They did nothing but gamble the entire war

What if Japan had a smarter assessment of Soviet military/industrial capacity than Hitler and decided not to fight a grizzly bear based on some retarded Austrian corporal's race theories

As others said, they didn't have many options. It's like hitting a 16 against a dealer 10. Probably gonna lose but it's still the best EV. Also, U.S. wasn't nearly as powerful before WWII. The whole idea of a superpower is post-war.

This is basically TCR. Japan knew that they were fucked in a long-term war against the U.S. Their only hope was to destroy the U.S. Pacific fleet in one strike and hope to bring the U.S. to the negotiation table.

And it's worth pointing out that Japan came extremely close to their objective of decapitating the U.S. in the Pacific. The U.S. only won at Midway due to a string of semi-miraculous events. Take away that miraculous victory, and the U.S. would have been completely defenseless in the Pacific for at least a year or two. Japan could have bombed West Coast cities almost with impunity. They might have even been able to occupy Hawaii, although their supply lines would have been extremely stretched. Japan was hoping that the U.S. public would have preferred to end the oil blockade rather than watch Los Angeles get repeatedly bombed on the nightly news. That was probably wishful thinking, but it was the best hand that they had to play at the time. And it would have looked like a much smarter move in retrospect if Midway had gone just a little differently.

The entire UK war strategy from May 1940-Dec 1941 was based around getting the US into the war because they knew it was their only chance

This was true even in 1917 in fact, and it's why Germany yolo'd the 100 days offensive in spring 1918. everyone knew the USA was the differencemaker

Given how they daddied Russia around earlier in the century, I can see how they might’ve assumed America would be submissive likewise.

The Army occupied and subdued all of China, got a big head of steam, and underestimated Russia. Russia literally built hundreds of big tanks and didn't tell anyone. These weren't even the tanks they rolled out against Germany but they smoked Japanese tanks that were about the size of a Bobcat.

lol@ this

Even while fending off Japanese attacks earlier in the summer, the Soviet commander had studied his opponents’ dispositions, discovering several fatal flaws. The Japanese flanks were covered by unreliable Manchukuoan cavalry and were vulnerable to encirclement. Nor did the Japanese possess a tactical mobile reserve. To cope with flank attacks, they would be compelled to focus on one flank at a time, and disengage forces from action in the center or the other flank. To secure operational surprise, Zhukov employed many varied deceptive measures. Radios broadcast false information and transmitted soundtracks of construction noise. Trucks and aircraft operated day and night to muffle the sound of unit deployment. Such measures convinced the Japanese that the Soviets were also digging in for the winter

They also hadn't been modernized long enough to take in a lot of concepts. Like they had some kind of honor code that involved letting wounded soldiers bleed out. For the longest time they did not teach basic first aid to their troops.

It actually reminds me of Ukrainecucks, like TDNW when he mocked Russians for using tampons to plug bullet wounds. That stupid fuck still claims he was in the Marines but he has the brain of a suicidal Japanese soldier from 1935.

Also, the IJN was kind of on par with the US Pacific Fleet at the outset. Their planes were superior.

What they didn't understand, I guess, was that our capacity to build more carriers and planes - and improve them - vastly vastly outstripped theirs. All we had to do was prevent them from spreading too quickly in year 1, and then we steamrolled them.

Their planes were "superior" for like a year until we built more planes. The Zero was like the VW Bug - they were all tuned up to keep making shitloads of this one rugged design long after it was being outclassed by more modern designs.

Nipps never made a proper tank. Nipps never made a proper howitzer. Nipps never made a proper pistol. It’s frankly a wonder they lasted as long as they did. They were basically fighting a 1940s war with 1910 technology and in some cases 1890 tech.

The Kwantung army could have raided the USSR in 1941 when Stalin was busy with Hitler. They could have taken Siberian oil and timber. It would have finished off the USSR and Germany would have won the war. They only went with the Southern Operation out of fear of a Soviet threat that no longer existed. They had PTSD from their encounter with the Soviets two years earlier. This thread made me go back and research this to confirm my analysis.
