if the issue was evading campaign disclosure laws so nobody would know about the Stormy connection, why go through Michael Cohen at all? Why not just pay her off personally? What was the legal rationale for the way they did this?

no reason, Cohen was a fixer and this is how you pay a fixer, he goes out and gets your shit done then you pay what you owe, it was simply Trump's longstanding (and entirely legal) practice for these types of things

somewhat right, but what was illegal was calling it legal fees as opposed to a campaign donation. even if it's your own money, you have to report it as a self-contribution

Yes. The crime was failing to report it as a campaign expense/donation. The reality is that Trump 100 percent must have known that there were potential campaign disclosure requirements when choosing to pay some whore to keep her mouth shut during the middle of a campaign. But disclosing it would defeat the whole point of the payment. And he probably thought at most there was some fine or slap on the wrist, not actual jail time.

correct. and he violated NY state law by filing knowingly false business records and taxes in furtherance / to cover up the campaign expense crime

is every personal expense that might indirectly benefit one's political campaign a "contribution"? Does a candidate have to report a haircut because not looking like a slob "influences" voters? If he has a kid to appeal to family values voters, are expenses associated with the kid contributions?

no, that's why intent matters. was he paying off the whore to avoid wife finding out or was he paying off whore to influence election?

that's what the trial will hinge on.

What if he gets a haircut with specific intent to influence the election and would have preferred to go unkempt but for the election?

I bet he even bought a new suit, intending to impress debate audiences, and he may have even paid for it with *gasp* his own money

Successful independent people view it all as "their money," they don't think of "personal" vs "business" money in the same way that wagecucks or even public company CEOs do. Makes sense he'd think of his campaign the same way.

Edit: and they are ingrained to run every single penny of expenses thru the business.
