It's never, ever about the gameplay. It's fundamentally about Engineering. Once it becomes about making surrogate activities for Losers, everything comes apart at the seams and it becomes a "business," where Engineers are abused and they hire a bunch of Women to do god knows what.
Think about it in Clique terms. Get John Carmack & co together and you'll at least get a game. It'll be some shit where you wander around and get lost, but it'll be a game. Throw in a bunch of Preps, Losers, and Women, and you're gonna have a bad time. Todd Howard majored in Business. |

They made a few basic graphical upgrades and jammed in the fucking Quake netcode of all things in order to stillbirth the god awful Fallout 76, but they're still fundamentally designing on 15+ year old tech. Perhaps unsurprising given that the studio's ideas really haven't evolved at all since Skyrim.
In contrast the chads at CDPR put out the best looking game of all time (Cyberpunk 2077) on a custom engine and then decided they needed even more horsepower for the sequel and switched to Unreal Engine 5. |

I thought it was as old as Morrowind from the way people talk and since Skyrim basically feels the same. If some new game used the Fox Engine or GTA5 engine it would seem fine imo. There’s more going on than just the “engine” imo
Also, you you even really know wtf you’re talking about? I don’t afaik. Only Engineers should discuss Engines imo |
