im sure there is some selection bias here but ive has the same experience. the really abnormal poasters no one would want to hang out with. but, aside from benzo, all the outted poasters are moderately to very successful. that is unlikely to happen if they were lunatics.

i think a big reason most of us really like it here is because this place gives us an outlet for our insanity so that we can be normal IRL.

All poasters are at least somewhat detached/distant from/alienated by their current reality/society which is why they come here to a bizarre, abrasive, offensive, and confusing discussion forum (participation with which carries a non-zero risk of negative life consequences if discovered).

By virtue of being detached from society and generally more intelligent/observant/autistic, they notice patterns and trends in society and are able to think of them as of a piece (everything from white/Asian relationship patterns to biglaw email diction).

They then come here with other people who are intelligent enough to notice this and begin riffing on these concepts and making a whole world of jokes and theories about them.

In time, these thoughts begin to replace reality. To paraphrase Videodrome--"Your reality is already half XO-hallucination. If you're not careful, it will become total hallucination."

Thus, the poaster becomes doubly alienated--first from their own temperament, which allows for recognition and prediction of social trends at the expense of unselfconsciously participating in them, and second from the distorting effect of xo.

Even being a bad lawyer requires a level of intelligence that would elude much of the population, and that sort of intelligence, while in some ways not very high (see the old classic poast about poasters calling blacks low IQ while declaring poli sci majors) is an absolute prerequisite to the sort of patterns I'm talking about here.

Of course, there are also people who are already truly insane when they show up here, but they interact with autoadmit a bit differently--it's just another forum for them to express the same insane shit rather than a place where they both give and receive insights and delusions.

if you spend time on xo, or around other non-normal people, you (and your thoughts) will become less normal. if you spend time around normal people, you (and your thoughts) will become more normal. i'm not making any normative judgments here. just stating how the brain works

a lot can be derived from this. for example, the extreme normie contempt, fear, and revulsion toward non-normal people is a completely rational immune response by their brains. in the same way that you can catch leprosy from lepers, and therefore you feel disgusted by them, a normal person who spends time around non-normal people - or who is exposed to non-normal thoughts - will become less normal. for most normal people, their position in life is secured by their normalcy, and so this is a SERIOUS threat to them

also worth noting that this is why "free speech" is bad, and every thinking person eventually comes to this same conclusion. you don't want bad people and bad ideas around. they influence others in negative ways. this is just a fact. actually, some ideas are simply destructive and evil, and they should be suppressed. other ideas are constructive and good, and should be encouraged. you have laws governing speech for the same reason that you have laws governing behavior
