Xo Nerds: Recommend me a GPU

Date: May 6th, 2024 2:08 PM Author: vigorous rehab i have a 3070 that's been crapping out for years. i was too lazy to send it to service since i couldn't figure out how to enable my integrated graphics and i need a pc for work. now it's out of warranty. i think it's the gpu because the crash log shows nvidia drivers and it often artifacts and shit when it crashes.
i haven't played a game since elden ring was released. but i'd like something that could at least play out on low settings if something interesting came out.
thinking of an rtx 3050 or gtx 1660. they seem about the same. but also thinking of an arc a580 or a750. but i don't want to fuck around with drivers and shit, and so i'm wary of that with a new gpu brand.
maybe it's just because i'm an elder millennial but "intel = the best" is still in my mind. crazy they're the underdog between nvidia and amd. cleaning towards just getting an rtx3050 since it's newer and i guess nvida is world class with drivers and shit. i just want it to work. |

There's no "excessive" when you have 474 xo windows and can max kingdom comes and no slow down on 4 monitors (probably a dual GPU rig necessary for that). You will understand when you get a nice rig (not insane, but nice)

most recent gen turned out to be literal shit because you no longer get a generational leap in perf, e.g. 3060 ti literally outperforming the 4060 and matching the 4060ti, the 6800 xt basically on par with the 7800xt, etc.
battlemage is also releasing this year so skip arc a770/750/etc.

if you want to go the MOST economical route, clean and repaste your card. if you cant repair it yourself and ABSOLUTELY need to upgrade, think in tiers:
super budget:
rx 570 8gb or rx580 arc a380 gtx 1660(ti)
budget:
6600xt or 6650xt arc a750 rtx 3060
mid-range:
3060ti arc a770
no point in going beyond mid-range for your needs. avoid nvidia in general because they offer the worst price/perf. you also risk getting mined cards when you buy used so be careful if you go that route. youll regret not waiting for next-gen releases though, d00d

xt = equivalent to ti, higher end model of the base, e.g. 3060 ti > 3060, 6700xt > 6700, etc.
my almost 10 year old rx 570 could handle a TV+monitor setup so a 6600 will have zero issues. assuming 60hz and 1080p you will be fine. |

if you are maxing out everything, prob doesnt hurt to watercool. i also like OCing for timespy bragging rights, so watercooling makes sense for me
30% util was like 40-45c, 80% a little higher at 50-60c. hardcore OCed shit gets HOT, 70c+. my pump shut down one time so i watch the temps now when OCing |

i'd say either give up on PC Games and just buy whatever is cheap to keep your computer running, or get a 4070super ($600) or 4080s ($1000). there's not much point to anything in between |

the cost difference doesn't factor in for me, i just feel stupid buying gc trinkets i'll never use. is something like what you're talking about going to be noticeably better *AND* reliable? can you just recommend a card that i can slap into my ports with minimal headaches? |
