The US is massively overpopulated - a 200M US would be far better

the per capita level of wealth/resources would be astronomical as technology increasingly permits the development of those resources with machines rather than men (eg, GPS-guided tractors which allow one guy to harvest entire fields in a few hours).
but we fucked it up by going with a 'growth' model. whoops.

BIG CITIES that arent NY should have like 300k people, and be immediately surrounded by fields and forests

it's not overpopulated per se but it is overpopulated around major metros and it's only getting worse.
it's ridiculous that in a country as large as this there are 10 million people fighting for resources in little 50 mile diameter circles spread across the country.
a complete failure of ingenuity, and infrastructure planning.

it's more like pervasive selfishness ushered in by the boomers.
it's hard to imagine a city like san francisco existing in the 1700s. a bunch of people moving in and people refusing to build to accommodate them. all because the existing people to maximize scarcity. all the worst gc hellscapes like toronto are like this.
we'd do fine with more people if there was a sense of community and common good. with that good, it's all "every man for themself." and of course less men = more to go around.

I almost never drive in rush hour, which is now like 10am-7pm here, but when I do I only think about how dystopian or defeatist all the traffic is.
Anyone alive in the 1800s would be absolutely shocked at this 'progress' of bumper to bumper traffic. The fumes, the concrete, the stress of people almost hitting you a dozen times on each trip.
Traffic is one of the worst ways to 'spend time' - ever. If some guy from the 1800s were here he'd just think, wow i can't believe 200 years later, all of the advancement, and this is how they 'spend time' during their days: in traffic.
its insane.
