They hate the fact that American's have gigantic cars made by comfy white dudes with pensions in Ohio and Michigan and Tennessee running on profits from Texas and Oklahoma oil barons that give you the freedom to go where you want when you want without being beholden to a time table scheduled by some bureaucrat who tells you the precise minute you are permitted to travel from Bakersfield to Merced.

These are the dumbest fuckig routes I’ve ever heard.

How would you Cleveland Detroit Chicago route work? Seems like two different lines? And who gives a flying fuck about Cleveland, which had like 400k people in the metropolitan area. You’d serve more people extending NJ transit and adding some higher speed trains.

Same for Atlanta Charlotte Nashville.

And lol about Pittsburgh. Who gives a fuck they have an airport and the city is the size of Saint Paul MN (without Minneapolis). Philly already has Acela connecting it to NYC.

biden's gay ass infrastructure plan is 90% grift and what little it does do is 99% renovating/replacing existing infrastructure and doing shit like bike trails, pedestrian bridges, and airport terminals.

we've completely abandoned the idea that it's possible to build and create things there. when they key bridge fell both sides were like "well, that'll be replaced in 5 or so years, maybe." the idea of building a new golden gate style bridge or something is unthinkable.

France built a high speed rail 40 years ago for a fraction of the cost it takes California to build one mile of railway. It's all grift and unions and Dem politicians. These states are entirely run by unions. The grift is built into the laws at this point. You can't just pay a guy to dig a hole and lay down some rails. It's not that simple. There are so many considerations. So many hands in the cookie jar. This is why you can't get anything done in blue states. The unions are too strong. They basically mandate that they're going to do every little work for a ton of pay. The only way to overturn this is for a conservative government to come in and start undoing all the institutional rot. It would take generations at this point. It will never happen.

but getting beat by the french is really depressing. you know that culture we like to lampoon for being lazy and bureaucratic? well even *they* are better at building shit than we are.

we took the anglo protestant work ethic that build this country and focused it on fart apps and email jobs. tragic.

France has very similar politics to California. If you think shitlibs are bad you can't imagine how deeply ingrained it is in the French. France has basically widely believed since their founding documents in the 1790s that everyone has a right to food shelter and prosperity. The role of government in French culture is to ensure that everyone has a high floor in their standard of living. Contrast with the fundamental American promise that the government ought not impede your personal success, France was founded on the idea that the government owed everyone a good life. They have the highest taxes in the world, the most debt. Nobody thinks this is all that bad. And the entire country is run by unions and they have a constitutional right to go on strike and shut down major thoroughfares. The entire country shuts down almost biannually for the latest government employees seeking more gibs.

All of which is to say how the fuck did they build a first world high speed rail in the early 80s with a socialist President? Simply put for all of their bloat and bureaucracy, they seemingly find a way to elect chief executives that get things fucking done. And they made sensible limitations on the unions and utilized budgeting. Like any sensible person would when building a giant public works project. They eliminated grift and stuck to their fucking guns and took care of business. Something completely unthinkable in the United States.

the difference is that french libs sincerely believe what they say and so occasionally good things happen despite all the bloat that comes from a centralized welfare state.

american libs only pretend to want this shit as a path to selfish grift. this is why san francisco elects nancy pelosi forever. she keeps the money faucet on for political libs and will knee in african garb and do other performative shitlib stuff, but then will refuse to even put something like medicare for all to a floor vote.

They are building a nation sized moat to insulate themselves from world disaster and they are moving politically to the right. There is hoap for whites after all.

sweden realized relatively high taxes/services provided and free markets aren't mutually exclusive

a lot of american politics boils down to fearmongering that the two are inseparable. if you hike taxes or want the government to subsidize healthcare you're a socialist and if you give business a longer leash you're an elite protecting reptile etc.

we used to have a two-party system but each with their own (very distinct) factions, now we just have a straight up/down two-party system where you're either on side A or side B. there's little capacity for nuance or dealmaking in american politics today

nixon's policies would be criticized as socialism today. teddy roosevelt would be called a communist.

the partisanship has resulted in all nuance and collaboration being destroyed. people will say it out loud. libs will refuse to say anything positive about trump even if they supported some of his policies previously, and they will refuse to criticize their own politicians because that "just hurts us and helps them." MAGA gop is more willing to criticize their own party, but they are even more partisan when it comes to compromising with the left on anything.

we used to hold elections and then move forward believing that if your guy lost that meant the other guy has a mandate from the people and should move forward. the minority party would work with the other side to eek out concessions and moderate it a bit. now it's complete scorched earth. even routine appointments take ages to happen. and major legislation is only possible in emergency situations. the entire system has stalled, and any effort to return to a system that works is meant with autistic arm flapping and screeching about how the other side is evil and everything they try to do should be resisted.

Even Swedes think their own taxes are too high. The last time I was there I was told that you pay no tax up to 4000 USD/mo and after that it's a 50% flat tax thereafter. They're becoming more pro business which was never the case in the past. Lots of Swedish businesses are popping up, including a headphone and speaker company Zounds which recently bought Marshall Amplifiers from the UK. One thing that's fun about Swedes is they are universally into art and mid century Anglo-American culture. If you go to rural Sweden everyone has a muscle car and a Harley. No one is having more fun than Swedish rednecks. I was randomly stopped in some small town at some house (I don't remember how I got there but I was being driven around by some guy called "Ingemar") and we ran into this Swedish redneck guy and he was like, "I'm just here building an extension to my ex-wife's house just to be a nice guy and so my kids have something nice." Prole Goy Mr. Fixit! Fuckin 180 place man. In many ways they are keeping the high trust society of protestant whites alive. Their churches are 180 FUCK THE POPE.

As far as the US we have 4 factions, MAGA, neocon, neolib, and progressives. "MAGA" is the first new choice in a long time that actually won an election and was very competitive in another for the Presidency despite being 5% of Congress and 10% of the GOP. Compare to the progressives in Congress they are about 20% of the Dems but they have never polled well in a presidential election and seem to have no power. Part of this is because they don't vote reliably, but also because they never hold on to their values and cuck to neolibs with ease. This is the most stomped on group despite being more numerous than MAGA cons they have 0 political power. They do it to themselves!

You would like Sweden. High trust society. It's way more vaultie than wasteland and if they have one flaw it's that they've been in the Vault for too long. But now joining NATO. They're actually building an army, cutting taxes, opening up for business. They never locked down for Covid. The only way they could become more based is if they started allowing more whites to move there. Now that would be fucking amazing.

One time I was in Stockholm harbor and this Swedish royal navy submarine was disembarking. It was cool as fuck. The commander was so fucking serious. He was drinking a beer next to me. Honestly have more pride in this country I'm not even from than my own.

Libs often stumble upon a real problem, and because they are built to CHANGE SHIT, have sufficient open-mindedness to consider a novel fix.

Car cities suck, traffic sucks, parking lots suck. Everyone knows this, but libs are first to point it out, because theyre built to ID some problems and get really vocal right away.

Despite this being something libs are good at, theyre not particularly good at finding the right solution, or considering complicating factors, second order consequences, etc.

So they move from "traffic sucks" immediately to "build trains".

Cons often just knee-jerk oppose lib solutions because thats usually the right answer, and because it becomes partisan and polemical, often just ignore or deny the underlying problem which is real.

But in this case, libs have not considered: BLACK PEOPLE.

People dont want to take public transpo because they dont want to be around BLACKS. No one mentions this, so everyone just keeps sperging out about trains or no trains.

William Henry Parker III (June 21, 1905 – July 16, 1966) was an American law enforcement officer who was Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) from 1950 to 1966. To date, he is the longest-serving LAPD police chief. Parker has been called "Los Angeles' greatest and most controversial chief of police".[1] The former headquarters of the LAPD, the Parker Center, was named after him. During his tenure, the LAPD was known for police brutality and racism;[2] Parker himself was known for his "unambiguous racism".[3][4]

libs love tying things they don't like to racism because it allows them to completely dismiss the topic without tackling the merits. i don't doubt the guy was a racist and the lapd was racist at the time. most institutions were. but there is nothing inherently racist about enforcing the law. in fact, it's another one of those "libs are the real racist" things. by saying law enforcement is inherently racist is tacitly admitting that blacks a inherently more lawless.

Libs believe anything that they're told, and the libs powers that be tell libs that high speed rail is good. Also, the lib powers that be make a shit ton of money on the graft associated with these big projects, enough that sometimes money just goes out and the project isn't even completed (like CA), yet nobody cares.

TLDR; libs feel good about repeating the party line, powerful libs steal public money.

In Switzerland and Japan trains are considered a luxury. Only in America do we think it's "luxurious" to have to physically drive yourself. What happens with really nice trains is communities spring up around them and then you can walk to get your groceries and shit and you don't need to drive around for 2 hours on a saturday morning to buy everything for the week. Euromos shop at bodegas with high quality food a couple times a week. It's easy when it's right next to where you live you don't even think about it. I grew up on trains and it was 180. I hate driving personally. That shit blows.

You take a train to work. You take a train back. You're not tired from driving and you've been relaxing, having a snack, and reading the paper. You get off the train and walk to your house. On your way home you pass by your local bodega stocked with fresh food and pick up what you need on the way home. It's a smaller store and you don't wait in line for an hour because instead of one gigantic H-E-B with 4000 Mexicans you're in a tiny store with only the people from that little neighborhood. Your grocer knows you personally and stocks what you like and gets to know you. May even carry some rarities just for you because he likes you.

Congratulations, you now live a normal life in Western Europe & Japan. 0 need for a car. Trains go into the city center where the nightlife is when you want to party. Trains also go to sporting events and concerts. Your parents live a few blocks down so you can see them any time. This is how virtually all 1st worlders live outside US & Canada.

U: stuck in a minivan on the 405 for 2 hours every day "this is so freeing! I can go, like, anywhere!"

I had a buddy who lived in Santa Clarita and works for the Burbank Water and Power. Lives a block from the train. Job a block from the train stop. Dude never drives and avoids the 5 every day. He's happy as FUCK. Has a couple kids. The biggest heist he pulled though was he bought a 600k house in coastal CA. It was some sort of distressed asset/government selloff type of thing. He got some kind of 1 in 1000 home run steal. Dude is actually living like his father and grandfather in coastal CA with a job where he can literally jack off on the clock. A pure do nothing sinecure. Never has to drive. You can retire in CA at like 45 with 90% of your paycheck for life. He maed it. Bet he wishes he could be stuck for HOURS every day in his FREEDOM MACHINE though.

High speed rail is awesome. It is efficient and takes so much stress off of having to drive, find parking, etc. It will take right into the area you want to go to, so then all you have to do is get off and walk to your destination.

The problem with the US is violence. Americans are violent assholes and get worse every year. So sharing a small space with them is something that does not appealing to a lot of people.

High speed rail (both inter and intra city) works very well in many European and Asian countries because people are way more civilized there.

It's stupid because almost all US cities require cars to get around. The focus should be on regional train and bus transit. Imagine if you could get from LAX to Disneyland in 20 minutes. Or San Jose to San Francisco in in 25 minutes. US cities are getting denser and the smart thing is to help people get around these metro ares faster. Only after regional transit improves does high speed rail make sense

Don't know what to do about sprawling shitholes like Dallas or Atlanta. They're beyond hope

The main problem with busses besides the undesirables is the frequent stops. No one wants to wait for the bus to stop every few blocks. It's a huge pain. Trains are superior because they cover larger distances and only drop you off at important places. Let people walk or whatever the rest of the way to their destination. Busses are an atrocity.

It’s stupid that people see this as an East Coast only issue. There are like a dozen major cities in the Midwest that are exactly an annoying distance to drive apart ie like 125-300 miles. The biggest cities in the South are the same, as is Nashville to Louisville/St.Louis/Cincinnati. A HSR system connecting those places would massively benefit all of them with the increased flow of visitors and broader availability to workers and customers if it were easy to travel between them. Same for the I-35 corridor and the Austin-Dallas-Houston triangle, where millions of drivers also slow down trucks/cargo that’s headed to most of the rest of the country. Even a route as simple as LA to Vegas would be a massive tourism boon to both places and it’s not hard to find a route that has basically zero development between those two cities.

It’s a fact of the size and space of the country and the natural attributes of these places, all of which took shape pre-50s highway infrastructure and it’s never changing. This has always felt like another thing that requires boomers to die off/lose power to fix. Boomers invented car culture and it was fully tied up in their own self-definition and identity starting in the 50s. Boomer libs attacked real estate development and restructured the government and the legal system to make development harder because it was a much easier target than cars, and it also left a space for the elite boomers and their lawyers to enrich themselves using their de facto development monopoly. Add this to the already very long list of issues that any populist movement of the late 2020s should use to brand themselves as the “fuck boomers” party.

i think most people would support HSR too. it's just that for the east coast it makes so much sense that it's just insane it hasn't been built. that's not to say it isn't worthwhile in other places too. but for the east coast corridor it's a complete no brainer. dc->baltimore->philly->nyc->boston. 5 huge, congested city centers located very close to each other with a bunch of people that need to commute between them frequently.

The counterpoint is HSR largely sucks compared to driving. Even in euro people with cars much prefer to drive. Just most people don’t have cars. The ones who do rarely take trains. Americans all have access to cars where they can sit in nice air conditioned cars and not deal with annoying people so I don’t see them giving that up to go sit in a train. And you can’t even drink on trains in America so there’s not even that benefit like in euro

and people in the us frequently give up their cars when they move to a big city. in my major metro everyone that doesn't need a car for a commute doesn't have one. it's way more affordable to rent a car from a poor turo redditor if you want to drive than owning a car outright when you don't need to use it every day.

The problem with every Midwestern and Southern city (except for Chicago) is that once you get to the city center by rail, you need to have a car. This is why the focus is on the northeast. Once you get to NYC, dc, or Philly, you can do a lot without a car. You get to Dallas and you're helpless

HSR should focus on the Acela corridor. Everywhere else, the money and effort should go into improved regional transit

What a lot of the people pushing this really want is to make car ownership rarer and more expensive so that those cities start to collapse inward as people start to lose access to transportation to their increasingly unaffordable suburban homes. There will be pushes to increase public transportation as well, with the notion that once that is built you don't need cars anyway.

All of which will serve to increase control over the population. The people are angry and rioting? That's fine, we'll shut down rail. Suddenly everyone is stuck where they are. Next pandemic they'll be able to say that only essential personnel can travel outside their little neighborhood. They did that in London and some other places, btw.

*5000 word lengthy screed about why there's no subway stop at Georgetown*

The last one that was poasted on XO concluded the reason was either "the proximity to the river makes construction unsafe" and "time immemorial." That was one of the main reasons shitlibs who have investigated the issue actually say. "We can't put a stop here because it's always been this way."

To your point about cleaning up crime if you elected a right wing DA who pressed for charges and actually applied the law on every dindu the city would clean itself up and you wouldn't have muggings and stabbings on the DC subway. Really makes you think (((who))) is behind this?

It's almost as if they're self interested and have rigged the system in their favor due to creating a massive voting block starting with Clinton that continues to this day. Obvious Boomer similarities between Trump and Biden.

Young people don't vote and haven't formed any kind of block. The boomers have been in power longer than any generation in US history. It's unheard of that their reign would go on for so long.

It’s way more efficient and easy to get around by car in a city where you’re traveling with ridesharing and, yes, Turo. Conditioning easier/more comfortable transport between major cities on every city becoming more appealing to people who want to avoid cars entirely makes no sense. Should HSR happen exclusively while regional transit remains exactly the same? lol no. I am pretty skeptical that buses are a solution to anything other than certain commuting scenarios, and light rail still gets cockblocked by boomers pretty much everywhere. Build some HSR and get some more money and labor on the side of building and then attack the light rail/subway issues again in a few years once a sufficient number of boomers have died off and you could find some new momentum.

The round trip in gas is like $200, but you’re positing the one category of travelers that makes the least sense for HSR. It’s amazing how many people in SoCal fly to Vegas, even though it’s so close and the inefficiency of air travel means it’s slower travel time door to door. Driving for four hours sucks. Let alone any of business travel where a traveler can pass the cost on to his employer.

This is one of those annoying things that is partially legit (a good high speed rail system would be great for certain parts of the country) but in reality is mostly push for "you will own nothing and be happy" dystopian bs. The dream for the people that love this is everyone living in some shitty apartment in some satellite city and taking high speed rail to their shitty job or Holocaust museum or whatever they envision we do for fun (air travel reserved for the elites). These plebs don't need to own a car.

What kind of question is this? The defining feature of Japan isn't high speed rail, but rather that it has an incredibly homogenous conservative culture obsessively focused on safety and cleanliness. Pewdiepie was pretty clearly displeased at all the migrants and shitlib bullshit that is prevalent in Europe. If he was primarily interested in high-speed rail then he wouldn't have left Europe.

In terms of my personal preferences, the answer is that I wouldn't want to live in either of those places. But in general, I'd rather live in Texas than Japan.

smart enough to realize that transporting cars containing perhaps one occupant would defeat the purpose of both 1) transporting people efficiently and 2) reducing car congestion in cities.

also that spending billions on a system like this is particularly stupid considering self-driving technology will likely be finished by the time the rail network is.

Auto Train is an 855-mile (1,376 km) scheduled daily train service for passengers and their automobiles operated by Amtrak between Lorton, Virginia (near Washington, D.C.), and Sanford, Florida (near Orlando). Auto Train is the only motorail service in the United States.[4]

Passengers ride in coach seats or private sleeping car rooms while their vehicles are carried in enclosed automobile-carrying freight cars called autoracks. The train can carry up to 340 vehicles. The train also includes lounge cars and dining cars. Auto Train allows its passengers to avoid driving Interstate 95 in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida while bringing their own vehicles with them. It has the highest revenue of any train in Amtrak's Long Distance Service Line.

seems to me that the burden of proof should be on the people who *want* to blow 15 trillion dollars running a "high speed" line across the Rocky mountains, by showing that enough people would happily pay $800 for a ticket to justify the expense and extreme difficulty of such a project in light of the numerous pre-existing options to make the same trip.

the real answer to OP, btw, is that high speed rail reminds east coast umc fags like us of that time we went to Europe in college. How cultured! How fun! drinking chianti on the line to Florence! It has nothing to do with helping the actual American "people," it's a vanity project by and for a group of people with an outsized twitter presence and a disproportionate amount of political power. this is the accurate answer and should be the final word itt. mods feel free to lock it.

sure. everything the government does should have a cba. and we should compare proposed expenditures and go with the ones with the best cba. so it's hard to say something that has *some* benefit is not worthwhile when we do so much shit that has no benefit.

probably a big factor in why libs are *so* into it, so that does answer the op. but i think op was just implying that only libs want it and wasn't asking a sincere question.
