One of the things nobody rags on 2 about is how unfinished it is. Like the way you have codec conversations with people right in front of you. Seems like they had more time to perfect 3 imo.

Real answer is Twin Snakes if it counts. It was literally made by *westerners*

If you actually sit and play it and monitor your emotions you’ll find 4 sucks to play imo. Worse than 2 to actually play. Damage sponge bosses, and they make you crawl for stealth like MGS3. Just being able to walk around like in MGS2 is cool imo. MGS5 brought back walking and introduced Running and it’s an improvement imo. MGS4 is a good cinematic experience, like playing Ff7 in 1997 or something. But at times it’s shitty like FF8.

4 at least had varied environments, and crawling wasn't that bad - it was all around better thought out. in 2 it was really hard to sneak around the oil rig thing - basically impossible in a lot of places due to small corridors. the roller blade boss was ridiculous too.

It was unrealistic given that it was broad daylight and there were a million places for a sniper to hide. the tanker was way better. I just mean the use of a fixed camera angle and radar. IMO MGS3 and MGS4 faltered a bit when it came to actually doing stealth shit. MGS1-2 or MGS5 get it right in their own way. I mean there’s nothing in MGS4 gameplay-wise that’s as good as the tanker iirc. I personally like the overwrought damage sponge bosses that are robots with deranged Hot Girls inside though.

Same with any internet fandom. And they’re the only voices that exist basically. So if some credulous gamer checks the internet he ends up thinking FF8 is good.

I sort of enjoyed the mission based nature of it. I played a ps3 remaster. The game glitched when I was pretty far into it where I couldn’t advance the story and I never finished it.

It just sucks imo. I’m not biased against side games or mobile games. MGS for GBA was good. FF Tactics is a triumph.

Portable Ops for the PSP or VR Missions for the original playstation.

If we're confining it to the main games, it's MGS3. 1 and 2 were a huge deal when they came out. Anyone saying 2 is completely disregarding how advanced it was for its time. 3 did not make any new technological advances, and was even a downgrade in some ways. It also failed to move the series forward in terms of story. A prequel was an annoying diversion after the cliffhangers in 2 and resulted in a seven-year wait for the series to regain any narrative momentum. Young Revolver Ocelot was great, but it was otherwise a wasted game. 4 is basically metal gear's Return of the King and has the biggest and best story in the series, bringing it to an incredibly satisfying conclusion. 5 has the best moment-to-moment gameplay and was a technological powerhouse. However, it was lacking in major scripted showpieces, and the unfinished second section was incredibly disappointing. Still, it is clear that 3 is the only game that brought little of value in terms of gameplay, tech, or story. Its biggest contribution is an epic theme song, which is not enough to compete with the other games.

3 is like the most popular game in the series. Nothing about it is bad. The crawling is tedious you don’t absolutely need to do it. It comes the closest to capturing the MGS1 vibe imo in various ways

3 is probably my favorite game of all time. Its basically perfect, with multiple GOAT boss moments (old man sniper and final boss, for example)

I know that 2 "was a huge leap" in the series. But playing all of them again, it is by far the most annoying one - its mainly corridor stalking and those fucking drones are annoying as shit. Story was great overall, but got a little weird at the end. I still love it, but 2 is my least favorite of the mainline 1-5 MGS series.

The tanker chapter is like the pinnacle of the series though in terms of how hypes you up all throughout and for what comes next, plus it has so many Details in the environment. Btw the rain looked like shit on Xbox because it depended on the PS2’s superior Japanese hardware. The ending is absolutely insane. The plant is just gay but watching paint dry was exciting in the early Ps2 days iirc

Solidus Snake is the one true hero of the metal gear series. All of the boss fights in MGS3 had already been done before. The sniper doesn't hold a candle to Sniper Wolf. Melee only boss was already done with Grey Fox and that was a better, much more narratively significant fight. Last boss of MGS3 was a character literally only created for that game who plays no role in the rest of the series and the battle has no stakes. What is the significance other than having flowers all over the place?

The way they wrote the plot you needed to kill her or else WW3 would happen immediately between the US/USSR, so those are the “stakes.” One of the reasons I prefer MGS1 tbh.

According to wikipedia, she "allowed" herself to die to "prove the US's innocence" so there really were no "stakes." Snake could have just called in the kill and walked away. Or he could have executed her without a fight since she was a willing decedent.

There were stakes in the moment. The, “the whole mission was a fraud,” thing was a feature of previous Titles in the Series as well.

2? That's outrageous. Being able to sneak around and shoot people in FPS was groundbreaking. And the story was mind boggling, especially the ending
