It wasn't until I saw Whiplash that I realized all these "jazz instructors" are reading off the same instruction manual. I was one of those weird kids who did jazz band in high school etc, and I could never understand why the teachers were yuge assholes till I saw that movie.
It makes sense though. You can't have a shitty musician in a jazz ensemble. No one gets carried. If you hired that bass player because he looked cool, your fuct. Everyone has to do trial by fire, and only the strong survive. I crapped out because I never cared enough. I just rebelled against the instructors and bombed out.
