I am watching the tariffs and with some concern. Trump is right that the tariffs of the last 50 years were starkly unequal and hurt American workers. I simultaneously love traveling to Europe and hate Europe as much as Hesgeth and Vance do because of their hypocrisies over tariffs and trade and NATO. On the other hand, these other countries have a vested interest in the status quo to protect their own workers too, and show every sign of playing hardball. They have more to lose than America in the tariff wars and will act accordingly to prevent defeat.
I'd like to think there could be a more measured long term approach to reforming the tariffs and other non-tariff barriers the EU is so good at rather than the bull in china shop approach Trump prefers. But I'm also aware that institutional factors are so good at defeating measured long term reform due to deaths by a thousand meetings and strategic delays to time out an administration's tenure.

i agree re: recession. tbc i'm not some tariff ideologue. my gripe lately has been that the discussion is, predictably, polarized between TARIFFS ROCK and TRUMP CRASHED THE ECONOMY. if trump's policy works it would always have come with a cost. so far the cost has been mild, so all the doomsaying is just pot-stirring. but that doesn't mean i'm positive that his plan *will* work. there are a lot of variables that make predicting how things will go impossible. anyone that doesn't become a billionaire off options speculation also implicitly concedes that they don't have a crystal ball either. |

Usually Trump points to some specific tariff like cars with the EU, but then just renegotiate that specific tariff. Don't erratically start a trade war with the other western countries that have been in lockstep internationally with the US for seventy years to the delight of our enemies.
The US has a variety of tariffs on certain goods as well as free trade deals for other goods, just like every other country. It's fine for countries to incrementally and thoughtfully add tariffs, take away tariffs, renegotiate trade deals, whatever. Trump's not doing that. He's erratically threatening trade wars with allies and blanket 25% tariffs on all goods, trampling on free trade agreements he himself signed, and doing this via executive order and under the advice of a fringe nutcase as his trade advisor.
You say that the relationship between businesses and workers is a zero-sum game and that's just not true. Businesses create value which is distributed in various ways amongst workers and customers and shareholders. This is a positive-sum game and is why you and I can afford luxuries that our ancestors would only dream of. The US has created more value in this way than any other country, which is why it is the most economically successful and affluent, and people of all classes have benefited.
