When I lack sleep (ie sleeping 15 hours in 4 nights) I tend to get a li'l hyper, overhappy, talk too fast and well all signs point to mania. I also end up needing less sleep.

it's all very ironic.

Is this normal or a sure sign of bipolar??

I don't know about adults, but a lack of sleep is normal in children to be both "overtired AND hyperactive".

That's true. I am just wondering about the normal adult's experience. No one is responding. I thought this would be a good forum because lawyers and law students are well versed in a life lacking occasional sleep.

I talk very fast and I'm not bipolar...the shrink promised me that.

I had a coworker that is bipolar -- it was pretty easy to spot, actually.

It's also good that I don't drink coffee.

Congrats on the no-coffee. I wish I could quit it, but I seem to need that 1 cup a day. So I'm interested, what made bipolar easy to spot?

She probably didn't see it, but she'd get up in front of a group of people and do things like go to the whiteboard and within 5 minutes map out an entire plan in her head and talk through it.

Nobody understood shit about what she was saying or why she was writing it on the board. She was brilliant, but she couldn't control her thoughts or, basically, make anything coherent.

We all knew it was in there, but only she understood it.

That's sad. I would be mortified if I had no awareness of my behavior. I guess that's the hallmark of mental illness/insanity - having no awareness of it.

So I'm guessing those instances are when she was "manic" as opposed to depressed?

Mania is probably the only reason why I'm not on medication.

Going through a manic state is like having your body self produce its own adderall – sometimes they can even last for days.

So you like the mania? I have to say, when I'm lacking sleep and feel hyper, it feels awesome. I have more of a tendency to be depressed so when I get hyper, my depression goes away. I can't shut the f*ck up and my eyes look like they're bulging out of my skull.

Yeah, the mania is the best part. Taking meds would even me out and probably curb the highs and the lows, but I tend to experience more mania than depression anyway, so the depression is worth it, in a sense, to keep the manic states.

Like I said above, what my friends can do on adderall for 10 hours, I can do for days with mania.

I'm jealous. I don't think many bipolars primarily experience mania. When my cousin is manic, he gets violent. Bad..

So from what I described experiencing, does it remind you of mania? It seems like all my problems disappear (I'm talking things that bothered me in the morning no longer bother me in the evening)

Kind of, but not really. Lack of sleep can make people do crazy/funny things.

You could have mild bi-polar, something like cyclothymia.

You mean you have been diagnosed as bipolar? And this shit happens to you??

My THREE cousins are bipolar (for the record, that's 3 out of 6 cousins on that side of the family). I hope I'm not geneticspwned.

Yes, but I think what you're talking about can be explained more through simple biology and evolution than through bi-polar disorder.

When you're tired, but you have a full day of work ahead of you, your body is well trained and smart enough to compensate somehow. Your body always has reserve energy.

The high you feel is probably because of a rush of endorphins, due to lack of sleep or the stress that is caused by your lack of sleep.

Hopefully. I am almost more energetic when I lack sleep than when I get lots of sleep. I have gone through 2 to 3 days of work before on an hour of sleep a night and I work 12-13 hours a day. It's so abnormal when I think about my friends' sleep schedules.
