Ho Lee Cow, you have a gift, my friend - the gift of opening windows into Heaven just by being your infinitely lovable self:

With just a few simple words, a Proustian portal to the past opens, all of the senses at once, the mind, the heart, taking us home to the places, the times…

…I’m taking a walk with my girlfriend and her GORGEOUS half husky dog after school, wide SoCal suburban streets with palm trees; fighting with my older sister over the gaming computer; playing BF1942 capture the flag all night; waking up at the crack of dawn to finish my homework; driving to school blasting M83 trying to stay awake at 7 am; falling asleep in the last class of the day; suddenly becoming energized on the drive home, listening to KROQ, the evening is young, the possibilities are endless…

I feel like we've lived the same existence sometimes, my friend. These memories feel like they could have been my own!

Is it merely our rose-tinted glasses, or was it really as good as I remember back then?

I frequently get that same feeling, that’s what’s so crazy about all this, truly.

And I don’t think it’s just rose-tinted glasses, because even the people I know who were full-grown adults then, they seem to find the turn of the century / new millennium era to be on another level of wholesomeness and excitement all at once.

It really felt like Walt Disney and Pope JP2’s vision of the world was coming into being - that we all had a real home and real homeland, and yet we all had camaraderie, a shared human adventure, an epic cosmic bootcamp, both online and off…

Remember staying up all night with your buds, messaging girls on AIM, sneaking out and doing teenage stuff you thought was rebellious but now can only be remembered as purely innocent expressions of youth?

How did we trade that reality for this one, I often wonder.

You know, I've thought about that a lot - both the idyllic suburban upbringing which we were blessed to experience, and the Globohomo clown world which has swallowed our beleaguered planet since - and it really seems like what C.S. Lewis and Peter Kreeft say:

God wants us to experience glimpses of joy in this life, but not too much, lest we forget our true home in Heaven (Lewis); and we must all learn, like Odysseus, the alternative to God's benevolent traditions of hearth and home, in order to truly SEE them for the first time, the journey home (Kreeft).

"And once again, after who knows what aeons of the silence and dark, the birds will sing and the waters flow, and lights and shadows move across the hills,

And the faces of our friends laugh upon us with amazed recognition."

- C.S. Lewis
