I can tell because I have, and most of them either don't say what you think they say, or they sandwich it between 9,000 pages of total gibberish. The New Testament itself wastes a lot of your time trying to trace Jesus' genealogy and tell you the circumstances of his birth. Like that matters

everyone knows this. evangelicals and those sorts of people just pick the parts of the bible that they like or adhere to their preconceived notions and worldview.

I did 15 years of Catholic school and I had to memorize all the books and passages out of the bible. I can't look up shit and I only read the parts I had to. I believe others here have actually read it.

For 'great books' are we talking Wealth of Nations, Leviathan, etc? I think a fair amount have read those. Or like epic of Gilgamesh type shit?

I suspect I've gotten further into Finnegans Wake than any other poaster here. It inspired my moniker.

I thought every Liberal Artist read Gilgamesh in college. I know I did iirc.

To me the "Great Books" are the ones written in the Victorian era or a bit earlier, when intellectuals had finally accepted that God is Dead and Life is Fundamentally Meaningless. Bartleby the Scrivener is more resonant than the Canterbury Tales today imho.

idk but I know pretty much every ivy has some version of the flagship "great books" year course for freshman, although probably not as good as at st johns or thomas aquinas

They all adhere to the "scholastic" tradition where Aristotle and Aquinas are canon.

idk what you are talking about Champ. Aristotle is close to universal in Western canonical education, including many canons far older than the modern Great Books movement

Nothing written after the 17th century was very good, and everything written since the late 19th century has been utter trash. That's because people started writing in vernacular languages, which made them more accessible to prole audiences, and this alone caused them to eclipse earlier writers. So people like Kant were elevated, even though their books were not good. Mark is the only gospel I like btw and Paul is a drag.
