I admittedly live in an EC city where a car isn't necessary, but even if I were rich & in a driving city, I can't imagine ever wanting something more expensive than a Camry or whatever the Nissan/Honda equivalent is (Ultima?/Accord?).
Luxury vehicles just seem like such a waste of money.
Do you Audi/BMW ppl really derive more utility from driving those than just a Toyota + wasting the $$ saved on vactions/drugs/hookers?

Why would anyone need to live in anything other than a 10x10 studio? Seems like a waste.
Why would anyone need to eat anything other than basic foods, etc. etc.
I refuse to believe that people on this board are unable to understand that others derive enjoyment from different things than them.

Sure, I guess though a nuance is that he does not even see the subjective value of driving a BMW outside of the prestige. Like is the handling or comfort any better?

i hear you own "luxury" cars--why buy a lexus vs. a toyota or an acura vs. a honda if the only diff is branding, some style cues, and wood trim.
however, i don't agree on performance differences. you have straight line acceleration, sure, but I feel much more connected to the road, and enjoy the experience more, driving a performance tuned car like a bmw over an everyday sedan.

Yeah idk. Ive never driven a nice car, but i just cant imagine it being that much better than a corolla.
even for you biglaw bros, isnt the cost of a luxury vehicle vs. a standard sedan like 2 mos of take home pay?
if you gave me the option of decent car + 2 mos off vs nice car & grinding for 60 days, id pick the former w/o hesitation.

your problems are
1. Rental
2. Convertible
3. Base Mustang.
A boss 302 is a legit hardcore sports car, especially the special editions like Laguna Seca.

yes, Americans are fantastically wasteful in their car spending
if you're serious about driving for fun you ought to get a track car, you will not be using your M3's abilities on the interstate
if you're really rich then there's no sense in not having a rolls or whatever, but basically everything from midlevel luxury on down is a waste of time and money used to convey status, it's a nationwide dick measuring contest that has gotten out of hand

I know they do, but it's stupid and they miss out on all sorts of other things like not being on the edge of bankruptcy for their entire wretched lives
most Americans are fucked and fucking stupid, if you make a few hundred k it doesn't matter, but most people finance these shitboxes and never pay them off
plus having the mindset that you shouldn't waste money on worthless shit with respect to any major purchases isn't depressing, that's just basic common sense

yea, none of that is limited to just cars. people blow money on houses, vacations, restaurants/clubs, furniture, tuition, electronics, and god knows what else that they can't afford. Hell we just had a thread listing prole vacation spots as pretty much anywhere that is cheap, convenient, and otherwise fun. instead you need to fly around the world and spend thousands of $ with the only added value really being the sense of self satisfaction you get. compared to those things, wasting money on a car that you spend 10%+ of your life in and may increase your chances of getting laid is pretty low on the totem pole.

13.8 is far slower than sub 13. I'm sure there are SUVs that can match that.
My car runs in the high 12's and I couldn't imagine owning anything slower.
Also fuck motorcycles on the track, i'd rather have 4 wheels.

i can see buying a midlevel luxury car if you spend a lot of time driving, or buying something like a volov wagon and using it for 20 years because it's really well made.
stuff like the bmw 3 series and bottom of the barrel benzes/lexuses seem retarded though. i assume people who drive 3 series sedans are douches.

i agree sitting in a luxury car wears off and besides, toyota/hondas make really nice interior these days anyway if you get the upgrades.
as far as performance, it shaves off about 3-5 min off my commute and keeps me somewhat sane (i get road ragey a lot). i can better accelerate off the line and quickly cut people off before the next block (yes, i'm that asshole driver). there's this one 4 lane road in particular where cars are sometimes parked on the far right lane but is open for 2-3 block stretches and it'd be hard to cut in and out of the lane w/o some extra power (i can go from 0-60 and then quickly cut in front of a bunch of slow ass priuses).
i also take a lot of weekend trips and some longer trips where there are scenic drives and it is very very nice. worth the extra $30k? probably not but it's not like it's money i should be spending on something else when i have plenty in the bank.

It's simple.
Cars are one of the top reminders of your status and how you choose to live life. You can have a nice house on 6 acres and go out to eat every night of the week. You can have expensive items that you might get more immediate pleasure from, but if you get into an average car every day, you're immediately reminded that you're either held back or holding yourself back. You have mediocre finances or a frugal. You're afraid to indulge in "you."
Cars, more than almost all other things, are closely controlled by their owners and can best influence their egos.
