If made in 1990 they’d suck shit
If made even a few years later even before Woke shit, they’d have Hans Zimmer soundtracks and sound The Same as everything else
A few years later and they’d be shot on digital and would look like shit but would at least be 60 FPS lol

False. the golden age of fantasy movies was the 80s. Conan the Barbarian still stands as the best of all time.
if LOTR was made in the 80s there would have been zero reliance on cgi. Imagine Conan + Willow + Legend but with 180 story and execution.

I remember reading this Newsweek article in 1999
De Luca can afford to back his hunches because he has the support of New Line's chairman. (Shaye retains the ultimate authority to green-light the movies that De Luca chooses for the studio.) De Luca says, "Coming off the worst year in our history, I walked into [Shaye's office] with 'Boogie Nights,' a 170-page epic on porn in the '70s and a guy with a 13-inch penis. And he was fine with it." Now De Luca is embarked on his wildest gamble yet, the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. The project has a little-known director, Peter Jackson, and no big stars. Still, De Luca is typically cocksure when he discusses the project. "Maybe it'll stink. Or maybe it'll be 'Star Wars'."

More interesting background from a different article I found
“This is really the first time you could visualize Tolkien’s imagination on film,” says Jackson. “The technology has really only existed in the past two or three years. We’re writing our own software codes that will allow us to animate creatures in a realistic way and show battles on an incredible scale. The technological boundaries of film are expanding at a faster rate than any time since the pioneer days of cinema.”

However, in recent weeks, it became evident that Miramax, while enthusiastic, was not willing to make three separate films. “They wanted to stick with one movie, and I wasn’t comfortable with that,” explains Jackson, who says their parting was amicable. Miramax co-heads Harvey and Bob Weinstein retain an executive producer credit.
