Because they commit literal election fraud to keep third-party and independent candidates off the ballots; when that fails, they smear and sabotage them.

The uniparty relies on "lesser evil" thinking to stay in power. They need that. They're both owned by the same corporations, billionaires, and Israel. They play good-cop-bad-cop (forcing culture wars to divide people on which is which) but ultimately neither does anything to improve the lives of everyday people. That's why it's a pendulum. One party gets in power and does such a bad job that the people in the middle swing to the other after two terms (two terms because people don't like change, not because they're actually satisfied with the government). Ad infinitum.

That's why it's like that now. Idk how it originally got that way in the 1700s or 1800s or whatever, especially cuz the founding fathers warned against it, but my poast is accurate for the past century or two

If you want the proximate cause, it's the way voting works. First past the poast, electoral college, etc.

But it's set up that way – even though RCV is better and more popular and everyone hates the EC – because of the stuff I said.

Nah, it has nothing to do with the electoral college either. It's the unavoidable mathematical consequence of having single-member districts in the House. The prole "Founding Fathers" hadn't done the maths when they set it up that way.

You could have all of those same things going on in a proportional representation system and you'd still have ten parties.

I mean my first reply. Of course I vastly oversimplified the points about the voting system because the important part to me is the ruling class's underlying motivation for keeping the two-party system intact.

Hmmm, let me get at this a different way, via the Socratic Method: Do you suspect they have a different ruling class in Europe, who are more benevolent and thus allow more than two political parties in those countries?

It's obviously a combination of factors. Idk enough about how the Euro systems work. But it's crazy to imply that every evil ruling class gets away with the same shit in every country lmao. Then everything would work the same everywhere. Things develop differently. I'm explaining why things are how they are here.

It IS a different ruling class. It's no more benevolent, but you know, things are different in different places, obviously.

Again, that's the proximate cause, and I explained the underlying reason the ruling class likes to keep it this way. I like you and genuinely think you're smart but you're fixating too much on what's essentially a trivium you learned 30 years ago and not seeing the bigger picture.

Ty for link though, it is an interesting trivium

Yeah, the trivium is very interesting. And I expect this particular trivium explains the structure far more than the ruling-class theory does. The ruling class could still do all the things they do in a proportional rep system.

What do you mean "all the things they do"? The sabotage and ballot rigging and stuff? The meat of what I was trying to say is the beginning of my second para: the fact that these particular institutions with power right now (Ds and Rs) wouldn't be able to keep power in a system with more viable parties. Perhaps the ruling class would infiltrate the other ones too eventually, but I think that'd take a while, and honestly I can't imagine them being as corrupt as the Ds and Rs. And at least there'd be slightly more flavors of corruption to choose from lol.

Personally I am a third-party voter. I left the Dems in 2021. I would consider voting for an outsider running as a Dem – definitely would've voted for Mamdani, for example – but I haven't found one worth voting for since then. Have only voted for Independents and Greens, and I also like PSL and Peace and Freedom. And I respect SOME of the prominent Libertarians (but wouldn't vote for one).

The fact that you wrote "these particular institutions with power right now (Ds and Rs) wouldn't be able to keep power in a system with more parties" suggests that I haven't explained this very well, or that you didn't read the trivium for comprehension, my friend.

I edited to "more viable parties" since it was kinda tautological with my original wording. How does that imply that I don't understand the mechanisms that keep it this way? They're two separate things: the "why" and the "how."

Lol, it just occurred to me from seeing a TBF post where he was ranting about "the two-party system"

And then I recalled how I learned back in 1997 why we only have two sustainable parties, and was musing at how few people understand why it's structurally that way and there's nothing we can do about it unless we get rid of SMDs.

the founders had some pretty lofty ideas about how democracy would work. they didnt anticipate this level of party partisanship. after all, there were factions during the continental congress and constitutional convention, but they managed to work togethet for the common interest.

we were the first experiment like this. i dont think they could have anticipated this level of intense two party partisanship. and if they did they expected the law would continue to change to adapt to future problems. they'd be horrified their dead hands still controlled the law 250 years later.

no. i think we should talking about issues and not parties. i don't think it should matter if there was one party or one thousand. the concept of factionalization and political parties is destructive since politics is creating the best policy for the entire nation.

right now we're living in a cold civil war. recognizing that isn't the same as saying that war should be factionalized even further. once again you're just inventing positions ive never said.

of course.

my point is that the it's not true the founders "didn't do the math", it's they never conceived that this level of hyperpartisanship is something that needed to be mitigated. and also that they never intended to create neverchanging system. an amendment process was written into the constitution because they understood that changes are inevitable, so they weren't concerned with mitigating issues that would arise hundreds of years later. they never even anticipated the federal government would become as powertul as it is.

it's hard enough to create a brand new system that works in their. and they failed the first time with the articles of confederation.

We have a far, far more decisive and dynamic system than, say, France, for example. Other countries have far worse partisan gridlock than we do where absolutely nothing can get done without maximal consensus.

Conversely a country like England where technically parliament can override any other branch of government and change any historical law at any time, the rapid change only moves to the left, has never once course corrected, and they now live in a disturbing police state where people are locked up for thought crimes.

Between French quagmire and British suicidal tendencies I still think we have the best system. I'm not sure what more you could ask for.
