I've poasted about this before. All of our athletes, no matter what sport they end up specializing in, play basketball. They dribble the ball, play 1 on 1, 3 on 3, half court, full court, pickup games ... whatever ... all the damn time growing up. They practice moves, crossovers, passes, shots.
The rest of the world, they kick around a soccer ball similarly.
Pick a random American, he'll beat a random non-American at basketball. Pick a random non-American, he'll beat an American at soccer.
The US will win a World Cup once that situation changes, when enough kids learn from the ground up how to improvise with a soccer ball.

No. The USMNT could get lucky and make it into the semis, but not really.
The issue in the US is that we have so many sports for athletically gifted kids to play. Basketball, football, lacrosse, baseball....
US kids are encouraged to play a bunch of different sports that incorporate different aspects of athleticism, not just dribbling a ball around a bunch of cones. Every driveway has a basketball hoop, for example.
This is also why the USA produces great GOALIES - Keeper is a position that requires a lot more catching, movement, and overall athleticism than many of the other soccer positions.
In contrast, look at our Womens' team who DOMINATE their worlds cups. For athletically gifted girls, there isn't a similar outlet. Basketball is reserved for freakishly tall dykes, and there aren't any girls in football. Any girl with hand-eye coordination and a strong lung capacity is pushed into soccer at some point.

For a country that thinks an ‘athlete’ is someone who injects hormones and steroids while lifting weights the answer is likely ‘never’.
Things may change, but organically there is little chance before 2046.
The US way would, however, be to cheat by simply buying people from around the world and give them citizenship.
