They aren't really comparable. Plato and Aristotle laid down the foundations for all systematic thought and science, where Confucius was a mystic, more comparable to epictetus or something or perhaps one of the presocratics.

The point is that what you wrote is non-responsive given the context of my poast (which was about their place in intellectual history). Showing that A and B are comparable under some dimension d1 does not establish that they are comparable under the dimension d2 under dispute. Nearly any two major thinkers are comparable in some respect. The existence of a scholarly field devoted to such comparison proves only that comparisons can be made, not that the thinkers occupy analogous positions in intellectual history.

Why is Plato so Confucian

I am a beginner who got started with Plato, among others. (Plato's a good place to start, hehe) I'm halfway thru Republic.

My cursory thoughts are - given that he's the pioneer of Western philosophy, why is he so Confucian and authoritarian and Asian?

Some key ideas of his:

Everyone shld specialise, do what they're good at, not what they want to

Guardians shld never know their children, have families or wealth

He LOVES to put people into boxes

Perfect state is ruled by philosophers

This is because, we are not islands, we live in an inter-connected society. Our actions have consequences on others. This, altho our individual happiness is important, group happiness is very important too, and arguably more important, that's why all our actions shld consider the group, we cant just do whatever we want

This is essentially Confucianism. The family and the state is more important than the self

I expected Western philosophers to value the self more, broadly speaking

(Finally, can someone tell me if justice is better than injustice, for its own sake?)

Not sure you can make that statement without reading both in the original language (and understanding both languages at their respective contemporary times).

Even if you're illiterate in every language, you can tell the Analects contain fewer words. Chinese back then could only write on bluebook-sized bamboo slats, and I think you could only fit 10 slats in one "book."
