I was reading LinkedIn and came across a long screed from an acquaintance. Apparently he trusted AI to polish the final version of a farewell to his last job and announce that he was looking for a new role--specifically, moving from a leadership position into a regular individual-contributor role.

This is what AI “polished” for him:

“Now, I’m officially diving deep into my search for my next step. Over the last 8 years, I’ve loved leading and scaling high-performing sales teams, but I'm ultimately looking for a high-impact role where I can drive serious growth - whether that’s stepping back into a Sales Leadership capacity or driving revenue directly as an Enterprise Account Executive.”

“Whether that’s stepping back into a Sales Leadership capacity..” ??

Stepping back into leadership after spending the last eight years leading sales teams?

Or is he actually stepping **out of** leadership and into an Enterprise AE role?

The funniest part is that the AI didn't invent some obvious factual error. It produced something that *sounds* polished and corporate enough that you might skim right past it. But the actual sentence contradicts the story he's trying to tell.

We all thought AI was going to replace our jobs.

Imagine if it did.

This is what it looks like when you let the machine write your professional history and don't bother checking every word.

PS. I let AI polish this because I'm lazy. Let me know if it fucked up anywhere. Tyia

Is he leaving with no next job lined up? If so, taking another leadership role would be stepping back in, because he would be out of it at that moment.

Agreed that AI did him wrong though. Should have said continuing in a sales leadership role or something.

I want to add my own personal story to this. About a year ago, I switched jobs.

I wrote my resume myself and made sure all the information was correct. I only ran it through GPT because I was too lazy to format it properly myself. I wanted it to look cleaner and more professional, and honestly, it did a pretty good job. It probably saved me an hour or two compared with using another tool to format everything and make it look crisp.

I read through the entire resume afterward. Everything looked correct.

I sent out about 10 applications.

It was only one or two months later that I realized what it had done.

My phone number was at the top, so I only glanced at it quickly. It ended in, say, 4651. GPT had changed it to 4650.

A single digit.

Every resume I had sent out contained the wrong phone number.

If a recruiter tried to call me, I simply never received the call. I have no idea how many opportunities I might have lost because of that one fucking digit.

So yes, check everything.

Don't assume that because an AI tool presents something confidently and professionally, it has preserved your information accurately. It can introduce a tiny error that looks completely harmless—and that tiny error can have real consequences.

I trusted it to format my resume, and it did so, but with a twist.

I got laid off over a month ago and applied for like 300+ jobs. When recruiters wanted to follow up on my application, they always emailed first to schedule a call rather than calling me directly.

How many applications did it take you to get hired, and how long were you searching? I'm seeing people who have been unemployed for 1–2 years.

I spammed my resume for around 300+ jobs and got interviews for like ~12 of them. Took me less than a month to find a new job. In fact, I got two offers. I have a great resume and a (((prestigious))) STEM degree that get me interviews for software engineering leadership jobs.

How many FAANG companies have you had on your resume? Would you be willing to help a fellow XOer break into software engineering?

I'm currently working through CS50 and really enjoying the grind. I feel like learning to code has changed the way my brain works. Somehow, the code even worked its way into my unconscious mind and helped me resolve a mystery I’d been carrying for 20 years. I felt the “click” in my head while working on recursion.

I've had an ATS reject my resume even though the recruiter independently reached out to me. When I mentioned that my application showed as rejected, he told me to disregard it.
