I assume there were always people wandering around noticing it gradually happening. But they just said, "hey cool" and left them alone until they were completely buried? Like ones in England, Italy, etc

the egyptians literally DGAF about their ruins when whitey showed up. when the spaniards showed up to tenochitlan, the aztecs had no idea who the people of teotihuacan were despite being only an hour away. 1000 years had erased them from memory. some white guy from yale bought chichen itza for a couple hundred bucks. it was in ruins and no one nearby cared or knew anything about it.

Yes and for some places there's obviously a good reason because the areas are desolated by disease or natural disaster and no one goes there for a long time. But the ones in Europe had to have somewhat educated people around to notice, no?

the dark ages? the plague? no one was concerned with history and archaeology in the middle ages.

Population didn't disappear and was that enough time for these ruins to be completely covered? Not arguing, just asking. Is that the reason for places like Bath?

i think you gotta remember 99% of people were illiterate and just trying to survive. they probably had no idea what any of that shit was and didn't have the time, money, or wherewithal to restore it. before whitey invented archeology people just thought that shit was old and pointless.

I was going to write history and the fascination the west has seems to be predicated on literacy. Also as populations get dislodged, new generations don't have any connection to the past through the more traditional oral histories and such. Break that chain and new people dgaf. I wonder if Mexicans will care about the statue of Liberty. Or lol will Muslims give a shit about stone henge when they control the British isles in a century? I think no.

it's like when i walk through baltimore, i don't wonder about the people who lived there and the magnificent spaces inside, i just want to get the fuck out asap. ruins are instinctively bad and to be avoided or torn down.

they were there in very rough shape, but yes in their current state they are highly artificial reconstructions.

I always thought it was weird that everything just is covered in dirt over time. Like the entire earth was like 500 feet less deep thousands of years ago.

i have had the same thought. i figured if it takes 2000 years for natural ecological change to bury something 10 feet high, over the course of an average person’s cognizant lifespan that’s only a difference of about three inches, basically imperceptible unless you’re paying specific attention. by the time it’s ~50% buried and something is self-evidently amiss, it’s become and entire project to restore and these people didn’t have the spare energy or intellectual curiosity to undertake it.
