This essay argues that the oscillation running through Ecclesiastes - praised by some as literary paradox, dismissed by others as unresolved pessimism - is the phenomenological record of someone performing the crucifixion of opposites under a god-image that contains evil without the vocabulary to name what it contains. Qohelet is stranded between a polytheistic solution no longer available within the monotheistic tradition he was writing inside, and an individuation vocabulary not yet invented, which is why the text can only oscillate rather than resolve.

Retardmaxxing leads to Achilles' final end. Full of regret that he fought pointless battles. In Hades, with infinite time and a deep sense of meaningless, the definition of Hell.

The obvious objection is that you're offering a corrective to the text by suggesting the author should have projected evil into God, but he didn't because he "didn't have the vocabulary." This just doesn't stand up as a piece of historical criticism, which is what you're purporting to be doing here. I doubt any old testament scholar would agree with your interpretation. So why bother reading a biblical text to just read your personal metaphysics back into it? Why does this text need to say what you want it to say for you to be right?

I'm not arguing Qohelet should have projected evil into God, I'm arguing his god-image already contains both. yes, you're right that OT scholars have not utilized a framework like this -- that's discussed right in the post, because pretty much everyone approaches their analysis from a redemptive framework whereas I don't

You didn't answer my question. Given that no one with a passing familiarity with the text would agree with you, why bother misinterpreting it to support your personal worldview?

because reading a text through a lens its author couldn't consciously have held is a different kind of reading. I'm upfront in the post that this isn't conventional historical-critical work, it's asking what psychological condition produces this specific oscillation. You can disagree that's worth doing, but it's not "misinterpreting to support my worldview" - the god-image containing both good and evil is already in the text

your response, btw, was nasty in its phrasing and betrays a closed, rigid mindset

again, no one with a passing familiarly with the text would think this is a reasonable reading. you're doing some kind of performance art where you assume a worldview and then go out and interpret things according to it. it's what all the great hacks have always done. it's not serious work.

I think Consuela's position here is reasonable. Your objection is like dismissing a Heideggerian reading of Antigone because it isn’t a critical edition of the Greek. Every thick reading of Ecclesiastes does what he is doing and it's not like he tries to hide it. He declares the lens and doesn't pretend it is a historical reading. Not saying I agree with his reading either. It's more that once he says he is doing a phenomnological/depth psychology reading, you can't really make this criticism.

gonna give credit where due, this is your best one. fox and loader actually engaged, even a "this may be projection, of course", except then the very next word is "Regardless" and you just keep driving. that’s your whole method in miniature now: write the confession, file it under objections covered, proceed. you even mock DC oversight reports for documenting corruption in the body and stapling on a conclusion that contradicts the findings, which is literally what you just did with your own projection admission. and look what your “scholarship” produces: qohelet turns out to be a marginalized sage, ignored in his lifetime, too destabilizing for the mainstream, beloved by a small discerning group, vindicated later. my man, you wrote your own substack obituary and carbon dated it. the assimilation machine has gone temporal — james was a precursor, kierkegaard’s queued as content, now a 2300 year old anonymous teacher is the ancient franchise location of Your Work, and jung himself gets diagnosed as too “status stabilized” to handle the material that only you, “coherence-stabilized,” can face. nobody enters your system without exiting as precursor or coward. but the best part is your own close reading cooking you: the heleq section (genuinely good) shows the text burning off every false stabilizer until what survives is receive your portion, know your limits, fear a God you can’t theorize — the book ends with a man made SMALLER. and you end the essay bigger: sole owner of the vocabulary two millennia lacked, egregores rupturing right on schedule for your corpus. that’s the tell between the crucifixion of opposites and cosplaying it. the real thing costs you your exemption. qohelet couldn’t find out what God has done from beginning to end. you read a book about vanity and found yourself in it.

I enjoyed this, ty. A good roast can’t be entirely mean spirited, it mixes good and bad as yours does

But I don’t see myself as better than others. My portion requires me to focus on this stuff, which takes a tremendous amount of time and has had almost no payoff. If I wanted payoff I would be doing very different things. Sure, I hope the work finds resonance with a bigger audience down the road, but that part is outside of my control
