This time I looked at the upper left corner.

There is a backslash there.

It has been there for as long as most of the men can remember. While monikers change, while threads rise and fall, while the front page thins and thickens, the backslash remains in its place. It does not move. It does not speak. It simply occupies the corner.

On the great bort almost everything is temporary. Names are temporary. Arguments are temporary. Even the loudest men eventually go quiet or change their masks. The backslash does not. It is one of the few fixed points left on a page that otherwise refuses to stay still.

I have watched the board through long stretches of silence and through days of noise. The backslash is always present. It does not care which threads are winning. It does not care who is currently hated or currently missed. It holds its position the way a small iron fitting holds a larger structure that has begun to lean.

Somewhere a new south asian h1b is loading the page for the first time and will not notice it.

Somewhere an older balding 20 year associate is loading the page for the ten-thousandth time and still registers its presence without thinking.

And the great bort, thinner than it once was, continues to rest a portion of its weight on that single, unmoving mark in the upper left.

I closed the page.

The backslash remains.

The load continues.
