But he never does heroin. The author never makes a big stink about it, but by the middle of the book you know Begbie never uses heroin, he just drinks and smokes.
The title comes from a scene at some train tracks at night where Renton and Begbie stumble across some old homeless man. The homeless man asks if they're "trainspotting", which is some kind of junkie slang for trying to score. Instead of saying anything Begbie just flies off the rails and gets violent. We find out afterward that the old junkie at the train tracks was Begbie's dad
