Clique System. there's a shadow economy of people with no Engineering awareness where the entire business model is BS. The top guys at the car dealership make $800,000k and golf a lot.
I've never encountered a car salesman who knew a single thing about any Car, whatsoever, period, except maybe what Packages have which Options

I'm a good example why, I think. I would love to buy my preferred vehicle used, with cash, and then have a trusted mechanic fix what's wrong with it. But I don't have that much cash on hand.
But I do have a stable job, and excellent credit. So buying a car from a dealership is only a matter of a couple hours haggling. I use my paycheck to make the payments.
Dealerships make nice cars available to poor people who can make payments.

one funny result of this three-tier set up is that the distributorship are incredibly lucrative but ultimately are created by regulation rather than market need -- and ownership of a distributorship is therefore patronage or historical accident.
Jesse Jackson ran a boycott of Anheuser-Busch and shortly after that AB gave Jackson's son's an incredibly profitable distributorship in Chicago.
====
Yusef Jackson, son of Rev. Jesse Jackson, purchased a Chicago-based Anheuser-Busch distributorship in 1998 to advance minority ownership in the beer industry. The deal, which created one of the city's largest Budweiser distributors, was seen as a pivot in the relationship between the company and the civil rights leader, who had led a 1982 boycott against the brewer due to a lack of minority-owned dealerships.

Because people buy cars? Most are fine, just have to get referred to a good salesperson.
Regarding markup/middleman: dealerships only get like 3-5%. Do you think if auto manufacturers operated thousands of dealerships across the country they wouldn’t also have to recoup those costs along with a return on the capital?

Sold a car to carvana recently. The process took 10 minutes to fill out their questionnaire, 1 minute to schedule a pick up date, and maybe 10 minutes when they arrived to “inspect” the car.
Carvana seems to be the future.

Most of the scummy bullshit with dealers is with their F&I people that you have to deal with to close on a car. Even if you are paying cash (or have your own financing), you still have to sit with them and hear them try and pitch you on all sorts of bullshit. I think many, many people just get into that room and fold like a deck chair under the "pressure" of having some bro spin some yarn about how vital the extended warranty and tire protection package is. It's horseshit, you just need to power through and move on. But few people ever deal with anything like it in their day-to-day lives.
Dealers as a whole aren't going anywhere. They provide liquidity in the market. Even if you get less cash for your car than in a private sale, you don't have to deal with private sale bullshit when a dealer buys your car. And you can shop your car around to a number of dealers to try and get a better price.
The reality is that there is an insane amount of free information out there, so dealers do whatever they can to squeeze people when closing on a deal. Just tell them to pound sand and it's not a huge deal.

Here's how you know they're scams that add zero value.
Accidentally put your phone number into a car site - you will get like 40 calls an hour for the next months from car salesmen.
Now email your local Honda dealers asking them how much it costs for a 3 year lease with 10,000 miles and no money down. They will ignore you or tell you that you need to come into the office.
Theyre incredibly eager to talk to you about anything up and until you ask what the fuck the thing actually costs.
