I haven't seen much cutthroat behavior in biglaw, although everyone's mileage may vary. When we first joined the firm (we called it "the shop" or "the armory") we all got tattoos on our penises that read "Agincourt" because we knew we were becoming something like the Army of Henry V on the eve of the Battle of Agincourt, hence the reference. Meaning we saw in each other a brotherhood, united in a cause for the advancement of the business and litigation interests of our clients, standing firm against the press of plaintiffs and counterparties alike. Since that tattooing day, I've seen many of my former colleagues come and gone, some of them dead from motions denied, others from indemnification liabilities triggered, still others from the manifestation of unforeseen counterparty risk that should have been more artfully drafted for. Not once, under any of those ruinous circumstances, have I seen a bout of disloyalty or ill temper toward their colleagues in Litigation or Transactions, whatever the Division. Maybe we have something special here, something that transcends the ordinary rhythm of business in America and creates an almost spiritual revelation among our ranks--"this is the Law!" Maybe I'm lucky and if I'd ended up at some other firm I would be worrying about being undercut at an anointing or spoken foully upon on Compensation Day. I don't know Stalin. It's hard to predict which way the winds of fortune will blow in any given cycle of life, but I keep my head down, staying humble and praying for the furtherance of the law across the world, and it serves me well.

The Madagascar Plan was an internal stratagem, developed by members of Skadden's infamous "War Council" in 1987 in preparation for what was then perceived as the imminent displacement of American firms from the elite echelons of litigation practice in favor of competitors from Europe and Japan who were surreptitiously obtaining "practice waivers" pursuant to Reagan administration policy in order to appear in United States courts.[1][2] The plan had three core components, each one of which was assigned to a different departmental head within the firm.

First, Skadden would accelerate a pre-existing program of land purchase and repurposing that it had been engaged in since the 1970s in an area approximately 50 kilometers east of Antananarivo.[3] This land would be used to create a "Skadden Directorate," with command & control facilities that would evade detection by the satellite surveillance systems in operation at the time. Second, Skadden would shift a substantial portion of its personnel base to the island over an ensuing five-year period both through internal lateral transfers from offices and a new secretive recruiting campaign, the so-called "Skadden Under the Sun" initiative developed by Saatchi & Saatchi.[4] Third, and most controversially, by 1992, Skadden would use its facilities in Madagascar to launch a series of coordinated ballistic nuclear attacks at prominent competitor firms throughout Asia and Europe, making use of an internally developed line of thermonuclear warheads and rocketry engines.[5]{general source?}

By 1989, Skadden's land purchase efforts in Madagascar were substantially complete and at least 250 attorneys and supporting staff were stationed between Antananarivo and Moramanga, residing in clusters in the hilly upland terrain while work on the planned main base was ongoing.[6] Despite instructions from the War Council to maintain a "minimal presence" for as long as possible, reports began to leak of a substantial number of American attorneys present on the island due to demand for previously rare or obscure (to the area) items including Alden shoes and Anderson & Sheppard fabric swatches.[7] The resulting media attention and congressional investigation, along with shifting geopolitical and economic factors, caused Skadden to abandon its Madagascar Plan by 1990. The whereabouts of the nuclear weaponry at the center of the plan remains uncertain to the present day.
