i spent most of my time in asia in China, which is a better place to live, since it's actually a real country. the expats there are still mostly all dirtbags though. you eventually realize that you will, by definition, never "fit in" to their society, and you're always going to be relegated to the margins in weird and undesirable ways

not that there's anything wrong with this - it's natural. my point is that expat life is not a good way to live, and long-term expats are all bitter and resentful about it, whether they try to hide it or not

My impression was the vast majority of foreigners in places like Chiang Mai (or Siem Reap, or Phuket, etc.) on any given day are not weird sexpats. They're 20-something backpackers from Europe and Australia (more so hooking up with each other than locals), Chinese tour groups, and boomers.

I’m 6’0” and he’s slightly shorter than me so he’s big for a Chinese guy. Girlfriend is actually not bad looking. So I guess he’s arrogant for a reason but there’s a lot of these kind of younger Chinese tourists with entitled attitudes around Chiang Mai.
