Breaking bread is one of the oldest human traditions and ways of fostering community. Is your suggestion that eating at a chain restaurant is “consumerism”? Maybe it was what his grandparents could afford or chose to share with him as a young child. In what sense would it be any better or worse than a state dinner, or a meal at a country club, or eating a loaf of bread they bought from the grocery store around a camp fire?
