Date: July 1st, 2026 11:15 AM Author: bearded church place of business From 2008-2015 I lived in my grandmas old rent stabilized 1 bedroom in Brooklyn. I paid $757 a month for the pleasure. The building was a pre-war shitbox built in 1931. The radiator ran so hot it was 95 degrees in the winter and all my windows were open through every blizzard. The roach problem out of one closet was so bad that to seal up all the possible cracks they were getting in from I poured 2 solid gallons of polyurethane floor sealer onto the closet floors and left for a two week vacation while it dried. The roaches still got in basically daily. The final straw was the rats. By the end I was waking up to 1 rat in a glue trap every single morning. The entire building was like this and the tenant just nodded and carried on. I was stacking bills and bought a house in 2014. The house was a dilapidated nightmare by the 2-3 train in Flatbush that I paid $650k for. I then gutted the place and spent ~$400k rebuilding it. Literally only the exterior walls are original. Everything else had to be done -- including the foundation. It took 2 years of work to do the build. I lived with rats for those two years.
