Why do people care so much that the US sucks at soccer?

So many people are complaining on Twitter and sports networks about how US youth soccer is a money grab and that the most athletic kids don't play soccer. But that's obvious because a great American athlete will make way more money playing football or basketball than soccer. Americans don't even support soccer outside of watching the World Cup every 4 years. Why should we waste energy on reorganizing a sport very few people care about here?
