Well, when they considered this at my old firm, the existing equity Partners were in line for a like $40 MILLION DOLLAR BIG WILLIE PAYOUT. The Sr. Assocs and Junior Partners were, however, FUCKED IN THE ASS FOREVER. The firm was to be split into two distinct businesses. But then the deal went bust due to Partner revolt, the firm ended up spending $600m on nothing and it has taken over 3 years to recover.

What size PE firm is interested in buying a shitlaw practice? Some kind of lower market shop? I'm sure you're a RICH AS FUCK SHITLAW KING but not sure how that size of a deal makes sense for PE

I never got to the point of actually meeting with PE firms, but there is definitely interest out there.

Why did the partners revolt?

I suppose it makes sense. The type of PE that buys local dentist offices and whatnot.

The Partners revolted because junior partners didn't want a raw deal, retired Partners didn't want to see their pensions jeopardized, and some Partners just didn't want to sell out. everyone thought they wanted the money, but then some got cold feet when it time to make an actual EARTH SHATTERING move

Fascinating. Sounds like it would have been prohibitively expensive to buy all those lawyers out. From the perspective of the PE firm generating a good return, not from the perspective of having the money available.

i think you're full of shit! which is too bad. law firms should be run by pe chads and "lawyers" should make like $75k tops

for them to feel bad, they would've needed to have a shot in the first place. at legit "biglaw" it hasn't been easy to make true equity partner for a generation, has it? the good old days have been gone for a long time.

yes this is true for Sr. Assoc. everyone knows they're ngmi. but NEP are probably still holding on to hoap? if NEP don't have hoap how does the model survive? i guess a firm full of people going through the motions for a paycheck but not STRIVING like the old days is still pretty profiterole
