Anderson, around 1 a.m. on Sunday, flagged down two East Precinct officers as they were driving by to report an interaction he had with unknown individuals outside of a nearby bar. Anderson said he’d given the men $20 to “show him around the area.” The men reportedly walked off with his cash and Anderson wanted the officers to know. Body camera footage of that interaction showed one officer had questioned whether Anderson had been attempting to buy drugs. “On my life, there was no intention of any drug transaction,” Anderson replied.

Police said the officers had explained that in order to make a formal report they would need his driver’s license, but Anderson refused. “Then I can’t remember if he demanded or, he ended up getting another 20 bucks from me,” he said.

“Then him and his friend acted as if nothing happened, and then he threatened me with violence if I didn’t leave,” he said. “They threatened to like, run me over.”

The officers then ask more questions about where exactly the encounter took place.

“I’m going to be honest with you,” one officer told Anderson. “What this sounds like to me and this is just my speculation here, OK? And I want you to be honest with me. Were you trying to buy drugs?”

Anderson emphatically denied that was the case.

“Because you gave him $20. He ignored you,” the officer said. “And then you followed him outside. Then you gave him another $20. He ignored you and then he left. And then you’re just here by yourself.”

“I understand it seems that way,” Anderson said. “On my life, that is not what happened.”

The officers then told Anderson that his story “isn’t exactly making sense.”

“It’s no judgement here, you know what I’m saying?” the officer said. “But if you want us to help you, you have to be forthcoming.”

When the officer then asks Anderson how he got there, Anderson said: “I’m here for work.”

Asked if he was accompanied by anyone, Anderson said: “No, I arrived a day early, so I’m not here with anyone.”

The officer then said: “So, what is it exactly that you need from us?”

“Well, I feel like I was violated or taken advantage of and so I thought it would be the right thing to call you guys.”

“Violated how?” the officer said.

“In terms of me asking him to do something and he didn’t do it,” Anderson said.

After a few minutes, the officer asked Anderson for identification. “Do I have to do that?” Anderson asked.

“If you want us to take a report, I’m going to have to have your ID,” the officer said. “So if you don’t want to document this with us, you just want to tell us, that’s fine. We can part ways.”

After discussing the vehicle the group was in, the officer said: “OK. So you’re declining a report, is there anything else you need from us?”

“I guess not,” Anderson said. “I mean, maybe just take note of the plates I gave you.”

He added: “It’s the type of thing that, like, I’m not looking for retribution… I don’t need… what is it, 20, 40 bucks? I don’t need that. It’s just the fact that people are here and I don’t know what word you would use, extorting people.”

The officer replied: “I understand that. My only advice to give you is don’t give money to strangers, OK? Go out with friends or coworkers or a group of people and don’t go out by yourself, OK? Have a good night.”

Anderson thanked the officers.

“I appreciate that. Thank you guys very much for your protectiveness,” he said.

“Yes, sir. Get home. Get to your place safely. Get an Uber,” the officer said, before getting back into the patrol car.
