They want a model that instead of trusting its own weights or experimenting to solve something on its own it falls back to citing human sources or endlessly searches texts for an answer it could have found more cheaply itself. Open AI chooses to optimize more for open-ended cognition, which pays off on long running agentive tasks. That's why GPT 5.6 destroys Fable on agents last exam despite being a way smaller model and why you can use the 20 dollar a month practically free gpt chat to find mistakes and make corrections to Fable Max API calls that costs like 2 dollars a pop. They are basically riding off Open AI's success. Which is not as bad as the chinese counterfeit models, but still not perfect. Google meanwhile has the talent to to its own thing without being derivative, but that's still not enough to fully compete. There really are not many options, there have been internal memos from a few years ago that leaked from Microsoft that said they would never be able to compete and replicate open ai, which was why they pivoted to partnering with them and allowing them a premier spot on azure and using them for their own copilot model. There really aren't a lot of options. There is open ai, open ai offshoot company, cheap chinese knockoff or google. That's really the only options in this space. Although chrome browser is the one thing that is really solid and professional and just better than everything else.
For AI I think they can still catch up. They have been putting off the new pro release for idk how long. First 3.5 flash then 3.6 flash and still putting off the new big model. But the thing is gemini is very obviously a different architecture than everything else. You can tell Claude and gpt are woven from the same fabric. Gemini is still useful in that its different. Oh yeah forgot about grok that one is different too, but it is annoying as fuck. I tried the new one and it is actually pretty good though. |

I think if you are talking about it writing a great novel or a play or something it might be a while before it can produce something that feels human and great. It definitely has already technically surpassed humans in raw verbal ability. But it still comes off as distinctly AI. It has that signature, it has the stink of machine on it when you read it. It can write something that is technically brilliant and more accurate and descriptive than any human writer would normally write, especially that quickly. But it still feels like slop because something feels off about it. The way it stacks abstractions. The way it lists too many examples that no human would recall without looking up.
In terms of visual art it might be closer. The newest gpt image generator is shockingly good imo. But also I don't think anyone will ever care or consider it "good art" if they don't think a human painted it. |

You used to have to look up how to do all kinds of things in linux and now you can just ask gpt and it gives you exact instructions tailored to your exact question instantly. You can be up to date on the latest research in basically any subject quickly now too. You used to have to read journal articles all day to stay up-to-date on like one subfield of a subfield. All of the things that make any type of intellectual work miserable are easier now. To me that's enough even if they don't advance anymore. Also having knowledge has never really been what gets you advancement in a field. it's having the pedigree to make the judgement (that others accept) that something actually is new knowledge. |
