If you saw the france pool poast...that's why parents do select teams now. It's not because they think their kids is some phenom. Of course some parents are legit nuts but most concede little league was better growing up. |

School sports are basically overrun and watered down. So people are creating their own collectives. I had a dance dad outright say he's not paying for dance he's paying for his daughter's social circle.
I don't expect my kids to be mlb prospects. I doubt they play past highschool. However, I do like going to the facility on Friday night and seeing highschool boys spending their time in the batting cage, even if it's just fucking off.
This is like piecemeal parts of the benefits of attending a private highschool or something along those lines. Nearest Catholic highschool is almost an hour from our house so this is the best option. School is also almost $20k a year and baseball is $300 a month per kid. Plus we can drop into the batting cage any time we like and they have nice machines etc.
Dance on the other hand is ridiculously expensive and I would have chosen any other sport had I known what I was getting into. |

The other odd phenomenon are these church groups, even in public schools. I went to Catholic school my entire life and only the hardest hardcore nerds did the Catholic youth group thing. Now all of the cool kids at school go to these Christian camps. The loser poor kids do shit like vape and drink. There are zero alcohol parties anymore. My oldest daughter really talks about her relationship with God and it's kind of weird. |

we saw in the world cup that a socialist/commutarian/collectivist approach makes better players. if kids played more ball (baseball, soccer, basketball, etc) informally or in cheap, widely available rec leagues, we'd have a much better sports culture and better players.
you wouldn't get to spend 1000 bucks on shitty weekend travel trips and get drunk at a holiday inn express with other travel families though. |
