I hiked all the way from perugia, which is a pretty typical st. Francis pilgrimage. (He fought in some losing battle there and had his first ecstatic experiences wandering alone on the way back.) The fatigue and strangeness of stumbling through people's vineyards etc. (no map or gps, just a vague sense of a direction) definitely contributed to the religious feeling of finally seeing the mountaintop city rise in the distance. |
