A man charged with second-degree murder in a shooting near the Portland ICE facility appeared in court Monday.
Mahmoud Said Ali, 42, faces charges of second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon in the death of 41-year-old Anwar Osman. Newly released court documents reveal details about the moments leading up to the shooting.
According to court documents, officers responded last Tuesday morning to a building alarm and a 911 call about a shooting on South Macadam Avenue. An officer nearby saw a car crash into a building. Officers say the driver, Osman, had been shot several times and later died.
Investigators learned through surveillance video and evidence that both Ali and Osman were rideshare drivers who had dropped off passengers at Portland International Airport at the same time. When Osman drove away, Ali followed him.
Surveillance video reportedly shows Ali stopping behind Osman at a light on South Macadam Avenue, getting out of his car, walking up to Osman’s driver-side window, and firing nine times.
Investigators have not identified a possible motive.
FOX 12 reached out to Uber, the company Osman was driving for before the shooting. In a statement, Uber said in part: “We’re saddened by this devastating loss, and our condolences go out to the driver’s family during this incredibly difficult time. We have been in contact with law enforcement and are supporting their investigation in any way we can.”
Lyft, the company police say Ali was driving for before the shooting, had not responded to a request for comment as of the time of this report.
