i spent most of my time in asia in China, which is a better place to live, since it's actually a real country. the expats there are still mostly all dirtbags though. you eventually realize that you will, by definition, never "fit in" to their society, and you're always going to be relegated to the margins in weird and undesirable ways
not that there's anything wrong with this - it's natural. my point is that expat life is not a good way to live, and long-term expats are all bitter and resentful about it, whether they try to hide it or not |

My impression was the vast majority of foreigners in places like Chiang Mai (or Siem Reap, or Phuket, etc.) on any given day are not weird sexpats. They're 20-something backpackers from Europe and Australia (more so hooking up with each other than locals), Chinese tour groups, and boomers. |

And what's wrong with the ruins? Traipsing around in the jungle, exploring awesome ancient built history is great.

Some Chinese guy dressed up as a yuppie white chad with chino shorts, white button and Red Sox cap is standing blocking the aisle to the cashier I’m trying to get to. He’s talking with his girlfriend in Chinese and they’re both blocking the way. He definitely sees me. I say hey excuse me. He doesn’t move. I then think he might not know Engrish so I point to the cashier and hold up my water and say I need to get through and he still ignores me. I then tap his shoulder and ask him to move and he finally moves aside with a contemptuous look.
I’m 6’0” and he’s slightly shorter than me so he’s big for a Chinese guy. Girlfriend is actually not bad looking. So I guess he’s arrogant for a reason but there’s a lot of these kind of younger Chinese tourists with entitled attitudes around Chiang Mai. They’re taking a lot of social media photos and getting dressed up/blocking the way etc. it’s annoying |
