For Nguyen, a West Coast recruiter and content creator, the question isn’t simply “whether someone has a roommate” — it’s whether they are intentionally “making choices about their future.”
“It’s really about independence and whether someone is compatible with the independent life I’ve built,” she explained. “Me living alone is not only just a preference, [but] it’s the way that I protect my own peace.”

A few years ago I bought a downtown condo that was bigger than I needed. I decided to look for a roommate. I was only living there part time, and I figured it would be an easy way to make some extra money.
I got virtually no interest. Whenever a prospect found out that I would be sharing the condo with them, it was a hard no. It seems like 20 years ago it wouldn't have been a big deal, but cultural expectations regarding having roommates seem to have changed.
